My brother and I just dedicated two weeks of our vacation time (we're no hero's) and just returned from flying spotters for the BC Fire Service, providing much needed relief, only to return to arm chair experts on social media disrespecting our hard working people on the fire lines. These are people who are covered in filth and grime, are enduring obscene temperatures, long working hours at hard labour while breathing in hellfire smoke, are constantly exhausted while putting it on the line every single moment, fighting an enemy that won't be stopped with true David vs Goliath bravery. I simply can't find the words to convey my disgust at any individual who finds it in their black soul to say such things. I wanna just hand them shovel and have them stand on the line for a day...What do you all say?

Being one of the boots on the ground, and on leave due to the two week maximum, from what I’ve heard they are not angry with us, but from management at BCWS…..and their delayed reactions.
I do find it frustrating dealing with command at times, when the orders are given by someone who is sitting in an office 400 miles away, and has never been in a fire, but has a degree.

Having said that, your right, any arm chair Facebook expert should pick up a shovel or fire hose…and try it for a day or three.
BigCgaijin…thanks for your support….You are indeed one of the brave.

Appreciate the job being done by firefighters. Should round up the people protesting the Trans Mountain pipeline last year, they apparently have nothing better to do. Get them out fighting forest fires for a while, make themselves useful.

1) Mad appreciation for what you, your brother, and Fire Services do.
2) It's 2021 and you still care about random strangers on the Internet? Media might be one thing, but it sounds like you are referring to anecdotal strangers. It's like the left picking on some random Nazi's tweet or the right picking on Antifa... why would you let yourself be persuaded by the extreme minority?

I have to piggyback off g eazy's comments above. First and to the highest foremost, y'all really are hero's and it takes a special kinda person to get out there and fight these battles. So, I salute you and the likes of you.
The sad and ugly side of the internet, is that it garners some real disturbed people, who hide behind their keyboards to intently stir up emotions and conflict. Just know that, none of that matters and the efforts given from each and every one fighting fires, folks supporting those involved and who have lost, or in danger of losing, is greatly respected and appreciated.

It’s a horrible dirty super hot job, I have done it decades ago sleeping in the old army tents with mosquitoes eating us alive, it’s no picnic. Those folks with the boots on the ground deserve all the respect, people losing everything are having a very tough time coping with all this. Seems a proper reorganization of the fire service who seems to have dropped the ball in some areas is in order. Why isn’t that Mars water bomber not stationed at Shuswap Lake, it would knock out those blazes before they could get started, there is lots that makes no sense!

Social media is for morons - why would anyone care what someone who you don't know says about you (or anything else for that matter)?

Which is true (the why give a shit part).
I, as I am sure many, got dragged into FB years back when it was a nice calm website to engage in friends and follow folks whom which I wanted to stay in touch. With all the disinformation, rampant ads based on who the fuck knows what algorithm, and general crap, it lost its attraction. Thing is the influence of social media has been proven to be strong. As in influencing elections, referendums, policy etc etc.
So yeah the morons are influenced and swayed and they get all in a froth about this and that, that gets posted, but I think saying social media in general is for morons is a pretty harsh judgey statement.

The thing is that you can expect more forest fires. Each year the number of fires are increasing. Due to lack of snow cover and winter snow falls, spring has a increase in flood levels , while before the snow melts could last to may/june; keeping temps low and the land watered. Now by june its hot and getting hotter with less rain coming over the mountains from the sea.
This deforestation by fire, will leave the land bare of plants and trees to hold the soil in place, increasing soil loss during rain and flood times.

There needs to be more volunteers in every community in the interior of BC to fight fires as they spring up. There needs to be more professional forest fire fighters and also Military aid from the Canadian Armed Forces, at least 200 per province. Places that have volunteer fire fighters, usually have limits to how many volunteers they can have in a certain areas. This would need to be increased during fire season.
But what is really needed is volunteers that can be called up at a moments notice, to either be first response and or back up to the first response.
Of course there are problems with this like:
1. Training
2. PPE
3. Liability
4. Availability - People can't get take off their job at a moments notice and still have a job the next day to be first on a forest fire scene or can they?
5. Health- smoke from fires is bad for lungs, the best protection is a Air Pack with compressed air. Not sure if filters work for a smoke mask??

The problem is our society. Anybody doing anything wants to get paid. The other problem is the government rules and bureaucrats limits people who want to help because of liability. They would need something to protect volunteers with a Fire ACT that limits liability, but still looks after people if they get hurt on a call to forest fire.

They are making themselves useful already - trying to put prevent even more GHG emissions, something you can thank for these ever-increasing catastrophic fire seasons.

Support TMX and other oil & gas projects if you want to see heat & fire like this year every year.

Already happened in one case this summer - after the Lytton fire, this week a mudslide cut the Trans-Canada in the same area. I expect more.

I know some people in Merritt - hopefully they won''t have to flee, because last I heard, 2 of their potential escape routes are cut off.

I don’t think expansion of the TMX pipeline causes much in the way of forest fires.

Part of the problem is that BCWS sends in aircraft to assessing the fire…..which may have just started.
A person in an office decides the fire has just started, which half the time is under 10 acres, and looks at the forecast for the next week, and decides it’s just a small uncontained fire , that is no real threat, and 100 years of fuel needs to be cleaned up anyways.
the fire is allowed to grow, and crews are sent in at a later time to help control it…….but by two p.m. that day, the interior winds enlarge that fire to 50-100 acres, depending on fuel supply.
The policy then is utilized to burn off built up fuel on the forest floor……and back burns to direct the fire….becoming what we have now, …
a total shitshow.
Ten years ago, crews where deployed almost immediately to control a manageable interface…..the problem with that is fuel build up grows over those decades…..and threatens homes and livelihood.…..and your absolutely right…
Liability has become a major factor in the red tape as well….the days are over you can just send almost any able bodied person into a fire, due to possible legal consequences.

Afterwards the burn areas are so large the ecosystem is so altered ,that living in that environment becomes a challenge to land owners and businesses…..to the point of the local economy is affected dramatically, the wildlife is altered, and aquifers change.
Then Forestry comes in and plants fast growing seedlings to stabilize the ground structure…..and the new plantings burn in a grass fire, if they aren’t choked out first from over abundant Natural plant life, consuming all the natural water .
