The Anaheim Mighty Ducks have traded star centre Sergei Fedorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for gritty checker Tyler Wright and blueliner Francois Beauchemin. The Blue Jackets also acquire a 2006 fifth-round pick in the deal.
Fedorov, 35, was in his second season with the Ducks after 13 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Groin injuries have limited him and Fedorov has managed just one assist in only five games this season.
In 993 career NHL games, Fedorov has tallied 1020 points. He won three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, the Hart Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player in 1994 and the Selke Trophy as the league's best defensive forward in 1994 and 1996.
"Sergei Fedorov is one of the league's most gifted players and a proven winner who will bring tremendous experience, speed, and playmaking abilities to our lineup," said Blue Jackets GM Doug MacLean. "We are thrilled to have him as a member of the Blue Jackets organization and he, very much like Adam Foote, will be a great mentor for the young players we have in Rick Nash, Dan Fritsche, Gilbert Brule and Nikolai Zherdev."
Fedorov was slated to earn $6,080,000 this year, and the move clears some room under the salary cap for the Ducks.
"We like Sergei and it's too bad we have to lose a player of his stature," Ducks GM Brian Burke told Canadian Press, "but this solves our financial problems and we're looking to reinvest that money."
Wright was selected by the Blue Jackets in the 2000 Expansion Draft and appeared in 309 games with the club, tallying 108 points and 436 penalty minutes, including four points and 20 penalty minutes in 18 games this season.
He has registered 145 points and 823 penalty minutes in 588 career NHL games with Columbus, Pittsburgh and Edmonton and will earn $947,132 this season.
Beauchemin was claimed by the Blue Jackets off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens on Sept. 14, 2004. After spending the 2004-05 season with the American Hockey League's Syracuse Crunch, he joined the Blue Jackets this season and collected two points with 11 penalty minutes in 11 games. Beauchemin's salary this season is $500,000.
