Best R.E.M. show that I've seen - UBC War Memorial Gymnasium, Fall 1985. That is when they really played from the heart.

I really wish i could have seen them when they mattered more........it's also a drag going to a show in no smoking venues....
there was not one wiff of the ganja kind.......had to be in the parking lot for that........oh well at least it wan't cold.............

But you have to ask yourself, are you there to smoke or listen to the music? You CAN always smoke prior to the show. Seeing R.E.M. in the 80's and early 90's was unbelieveable.
