Hi Vangary

Rashes are very common and can be caused by many things e.g. Dry skin, irritation from shaving, allergic reactions etc…

The situations when someone may develop a rash from a sexually transmitted infection (STI) would be;

- When someone first gets infected with HIV it is possible that they may get a flu like illness that can cause a rash.

- People who get syphilis can also develop a rash.

The most common symptom of a STI is feeling fine.

If someone just had a rash I would not be concerned that it is a sign of a STI as there are so many things that can cause rashes.

If you develop a rash and are concerned that it may be caused by an STI, I would just suggest you come to a clinic for a test.

Here is a link on what tests we recommend.

Do not take this as absolute truth or medical diagnosis I have no idea about these people and its for just for your information .but this handy guide to skin conditions might be of some help .

Hi resercher

Thanks for the link. This is probably one of the best resources for skin conditions that I have seen. I have passed the link to the other nurses.

The only thing you need to be careful with is that it is also common for skin conditions to look different, there can be quite a range. For example I have seen sores I thought for sure were herpes, turn out to be syphilis.

I have also noticed from the clinic that if someone is concerned about an STI or HIV they will think any skin mark is an STI.

It can be helpful to use pictures from the internet to give you an idea of what is going on but you should come to the clinic or see your doctor, so that they can see it and do some tests.

Also if you find yourself getting freaked out, avoid the pictures, most cases on the internet are much worse than what we see in the clinic. I guess they take the pictures of only the worse cases.
