I'm on a few boards and the number of racist comments, at the slightest excuse is amazing.

Most are from UK or American posters.

I always wonder if these people would turn down a black or Indian surgeon if they needed a life saving op.

Some people are just bitter and prefer to shift the blame onto others...

Personally, there are far too many attractive women of other races for me to ever be racist. Yes, I'm simple like that

It is based on ignorance for the most part....that being said I have had 1 racist comment thrown at me by a co-worker a number of years back....he was/is a Pakistani fellow....I got a bit of work that he figured should have been his....the next day when I ran into him he yapped off and said his piece and finished it off with "you white guys are all the same"....I was offended but I let it slide....if the situation had been reversed I am quite sure he would have played the race card till he was frothing at the mouth.

I agree that racism is caused almost always by ignorance, and ignorance is not bound by race. The ignorance and racism of members of other groups is never an excuse for one's own. The only cure is education and exposure to others.

I once worked for a couple of years teaching school in an Islamic region in Africa. I lived at the school and socialised with the other teachers and people in the town (in town, mostly with those from a different part of the country who were also out of their element). I found them exactly like I find people everywhere else -- a mixture of truly admirable people and assholes and everything in between. On average though, I was impressed by the other teachers' optimism and dedication to their jobs -- in spite of the obvious problems of corruption and financial shortages within the education system.

The only other "whites" in the area lived in a company compound where they carried out a major construction project. They had regular trips home, never socialized with anyone local, and thought they were experts. They complained constantly about the difficulty of working with their employees, their laziness, imcompetence, etc. Despite their access to things I coveted -- European food, recent movies, etc. -- I couldn't tolerate their racist opinions and ignorance, and stopped visiting after a short time. I am sure they held themselves up as experts on the culture when they returned home and spread their ignorance to others.

It's unbelievable how much racism still exists. It's mostly subtle though, a joke here, a stereotype there. People think that just because they're not wearing a white hood they're not racist. I strongly disagree. Some insist that if it's between friends it's different. I suppose perhaps it could be, but I'm doubtful because I know people who make racist jokes about themselves all the time, only to admit that they really hate it, they just don't want to start a confrontation. It's ridiculous people have to do that in Canada, in 2011.

I am on some other boards in a totally different arena than this one. We enforce a strict No Politics, No Religion and No Racism Rule on both boards. Many of the people who are racist are probably associated with some White Supremacy group as a worst case and the others are making lame attempts at humour using the N word etc. After infracting them into the stone age they either tow the line or just go off some where else with their stuff.

One thing that does make me cringe here is the use of the word "Jap". You will see it used in the reviews/411 area infrequently.

I have Japanese friends and they would take offence at its use.

The thing about racism that gets me is that it is color blind and cuts both ways. It is not just people of European descent that do it, all cultures do it, and all think they don't.

lol I was just saying that to make a point, but trust me I fully agree that white people are not the only racist people. I get annoyed by any kind of racism, be it against black, asian, white, whatever! It's all ridiculous.

Thats a good example of a prejudice comment. He's pre judging new immigrants by assuming they all behave that way, and we all know that's not true.

But from his comment, nothing says that Goo is a 'racist', as in someone who believes "that races have distinctive cultural characteristics determined by hereditary factors and that this endows some races with an intrinsic superiority over others" (lifted from Dictionary.com), which is far less common than prejudice, intolerance and baseless hate.

I know lots of guys that tell the jokes, and sometimes go as far as to say the classics like, "they should go back to where they came from", but I know that they're not racial supremacists. They couldn't care less about their 'white brothers', or have a hint of pride about being white. But they'll express their dislike for say, black people, and because we grew up in Vancouver (not a lot of black people) I have to ask them if they've ever even met a black person, let alone been wronged by one enough to hate them all. Usually don't get much of an answer. They don't even know why. Stupid.

As for me? I hate everyone, equally! ♥

As i said above, ignorance breeds this kind of thinking. Actual knowledge of real people would temper this kind of thought.

What bores me to death are comedians who tell jokes about race. They don't tell racist jokes, they just tell jokes all about race, like all the time. How low can you get, and cheap, and boring.

I think some of the problem is political correctness has gone to far.
If I dont get along with another white guy at my work, its no big deal.
If I dont get along with a woman at my work, its cause I am sexist.
If I dont get along with a black man at my work, its cause I am racist.

I always thought that if I were say black, I'd prefer people not hide their racism.
I'd rather work into the office knowing who was racist, and who wasn't.
Instead of the entire office, pretending they aren't.

An example I had, was going to an East Indian candy store in Surrey. I was working near there and a lady asked me to pick up a pound of this stuff, can't even remember what it was called. Very sugary candy.

So I am in the store the 2 clerks are talking Punjabi I guess. Charges me $8 and I leave. The lady behind me in line, comes out and stops me.
She told me, that amount of that candy should be $2, and that the only reason she noticed, was cause the 2 clerks were saying nasty things about me while I was in line. I think I would prefer a not whites allowed sign out front

I'm an equal opportunity hater. I despise all humans for their innumerable failings and inability to be more than the pitiful beings they generally are.

Fuck 'em all I say. Race is irrelevant in this regard. All the tribes should be extinguished.

But since I'm waay too laid back to do anything about this sad state of affairs, none need be too concerned.

I note that individuals can redeem themselves by evidencing to me that they do not deserve my scorn, but as a rule they deserve scorn to begin because giving them any credit in light of the history of our species is just foolishness.

Dude, that's stereotyping not racism. Non-Caucasian calling a Caucasian a "white guy" is racism, give me a fucking break... By the same token, a Caucasian calling an African guy a "black guy" is racism too then.

Racism as we know it is only a few hundred years old. Therefore, we could change the way we perceive race, as it is not natural. However, that will never happen. It's too hard, too convenient and the fact that most of society denies racism is prevalent means that it is here to stay.

Huh? Racism (or the same thing) has been a factor as long as there have been people around that didn't belong to the same tribe, spoke a different language, and didn't pray to the same forest god. I expect it was better to kill or enslave "the other" when possible, than to risk them doing it to you -- and since they weren't quite human anyway.....

This would have only lessened somewhat when trade became a factor, and it became possible to exchange goods rather than plunder them.

Trust me on this Hank, knowing someone doesn't make a racist less racist. My ex-wife's parents didn't even want to see their grandchildren. Their opinion of having a Black Guy married to their daughter never changed, they wouldn't visit at the same time as my mother or sisters - in fact my ex-wife would tell them when my family was scheduled to visit so that they wouldn't have to deal with Black relatives.

Now that I know you're black, my opinion of you has completely changed.

You are, of course, correct. But exposure certainly helps, sometimes quickly, and at least in the long run, or in the next generation.

My compliments to all of you who never utter a racist slur or think a racisit thought. You are a better person then me. Maybe. I occaisionally do both and I hate myself for it. It's never to someone I know or have any contact with. It's usually to a friend or loved one or to myself, directed at someone in a passing car or on the television. I wish I could stop, I try and every day I do a little better.

This is a battle I believe a lot of us fight with ourselves daily. I doubt that many people know this about me. It's hard to get past the stereotypes sometimes. Every time I see a car go by with the windows covered to protect the driver from the sun, I know who is behind that newspaper blocking their vision and I think something bad. I wish I didn't but I do.

I'm not alone and I think this happens to a lot of people from different backgrounds, heritages and income levels. In some ways it makes us human.
