Caveat Emptor
How serious are you about your business because chances are, you will get what you paid for. Here are some things to ask yourself and them:
Are these guys able to properly employ the myriad of technologies required to pull off a successful commercial web site? Are they artists, as well as technicians because both roles are vital. Will they take the time to know your business and your vision well enough to translate that understanding into a site the will correctly represent your business online to a global audience? What functionality are they capable of programming into the site? Have they any experience with server side programming languages or database development? Are they capable of photo manipulation and graphics management? Can they write selling copy? Are they able to develop sites that are optimized for the server environment? Is the code that they produce valid and not some spaghetti code disaster that only works on older versions of Internet Explorer?
How reliable is the host? Is there 24/7 technical support and when you call it do they 'really' know what they are doing (trust me, this isn't always the case...). What exactly do you get with your hosting package?
If you're serious about representing yourself online, then 50 bucks is a joke. Hire a professional, determine how you define return on investment and then invest an appropriate amount of money into this facet of your business.
If you don't really care and are just looking to have some site online, then run with the deal.
The cost will vary depending on the firm you hire and where the developers are located. If they are in Vancouver, chances are they will be more expensive than a firm located in a mid sized city like Kelowna or Prince George. In these smaller cities, a middle of the road figure for a better than average site will come in somewhere between 1500 and 3500 dollars.
Hope this helps. On a personal note, be sure to pay a Canadian hosting company for hosting, not some American company. Doing so helps other Canadian businesses, encourages technological growth in our economy and keeps Canadian money in Canada. Don't give it to the Yankees when there's great Canadian hosts out there (assuming of course that yer canadian...)
