I have gathered that a few on here own set top DVD recorders. One question about them.

Can you take DVD's recorded in them and play/edit them directly on yer PC, like a MPEG file, or does the recorder store them on the DVD in some lame proprietary format.

My ATI all in wonder card jerking me around soz I can't record TV, all my VCR's have long gave up the ghost and I need/want to have a reliable way to record TV shows and if I like them edit out the commercials and burn them to a permanent DVD.

Fukk my all in wonder card was awesome for doing this but the piece of shit is primo jerking me around.

I believe that most of the new ones store the video in the dvd-vr format? As I understand it, this format is supposed to be an editable dvd format. So you should be able to edit it on the computer or in another dvd recorder.

As for a DVD recorder, get one with a HDD so you can time shift too.

Yep. You can record on DVD-RW, dump it on your hard drive and edit using MPEG Video Wizard. I transferred over a few VHS tapes that way and it works like a charm. It records in 2 channel but not Dolby 5.1 or anything like that. I've got the Toshiba RD-XS32.

Almost forgot...I can also record to the recorder's hard drive but prefer to edit on my PC.

I've updated these cock-sukkin video drivers left right and center, and no go. Went back and used old drivers, played around with the settings in MSCONFIG, uninstalled my DAO components. Installed the same drivers 15 different ways and nadda.

Formatted once and that didn't fix it. I'll be fukked if I'm gonna format again, I haven't the time nor patience to keep playing Sherlock Holmes with this stupid fukkin computer. The video capture no longer works on a fukkin 1yr old card that I fukkin well paid $300+ taxs for, I'm royally choked and pissed off.

ATI can go suck on my ass.

The opposite is true for ATI all in wonder cards though. Once you have it working, DON'T FUCK WITH IT. :D

*Not bashing Ati as I have one of these cards in my system too.*

My DVD recorder burns just like a regular DVD movie with VOB, ISO etc. I record onto the hard drive, edit, then burn onto a DVD. I sometimes copy a DVD or VHS, then edit and burn. It is very simple, but you don't have the options that you would have if you do it on a computer. You cannot add soundtracks, use special transitions etc. I guess it come down to either fixing your capture card, getting a firewire card or getting a 3rd party program that converts DVD movies into mpeg.
