Like many hobbyists I was pleased to hear that one of my favourite courses had reopened. Most recently I’ve been playing a lot of “golf” at the Sirena Golf and Country Club but the reopening of Pamela’s Country Club combined with a brief closure at Sirena’s was an opportunity.
I was lucky getting a tee time. There has been lots of demand with the reopening and the starter’s mailbox had not been set up yet. But I did receive a prompt callback and made a reservation.
Pamela has a new clubhouse. The old Chinatown location has been upgraded to a more spacious one on the western edge of downtown. Its clean, nice and serviceable but is clearly unfinished. The basics like the shower etc. are fine but the nice ambiance and touches of the old place aren’t in place yet. Knowing the owner’s ability and taste I am sure this will be remedied in the coming months. As a side note, the clubhouse had numerous “welcome back” floral assortments and Pam was clearly touched by the positive reaction to her reopening.
I’m pleased to say that the course is ever bit as playable as ever. Nicely contoured, well maintained and with the trademark close cropped green near the hole. The caddy uniform, a variation on the “little black dress”, managed to be simple, stylish and inspiring all at the same time.
I was anxious to tee off but my caddy (Pamela) suggested a vigorous massage before the round proper. While I remember her massages as excellent historically today’s version was particularly strong, vigorous and effective.
My caddy then suggested I might be able to achieve extra length is she cleaned my club. While I found it difficult to believe extra length was possible it certainly started the round off well.
Finally it was time to swing the big wood. With the massage, the cleaning and my caddy’s excellent course management the round was accomplished in relatively few strokes. It was only later on reviewing my scorecard that I realized I shot an even par 72, split equally between the front and back nines. Certainly it was the most enjoyable twin 36s I had scored in a long time.
In more standard scoring:
Looks: Pics are accurate, judge for yourself
Service/Attitude: We are talking Pam here. She’s back…………………
