The bigger penis matters argument is a red herring. Of course a naked man sporting a larger appendage looks more attractive in a picture. Study participants were basing there opinion purely on the appearance of pictures. With no other interaction, of course appearance will matter. When you have to interact with a person, appearance becomes less important. Would I like to be 6'2" with broad shoulders and face like Clark Kent? Absolutely. But I know a guy who fits this description and he's a dick. Now this isn't to say appearance doesn't matter, but if a person is at least average in attractiveness, personality, fitness, success and social standing become the criteria by which they are judged.
Talking about penis size, I suspect average is best. More versitile.
There is such a thing as too big. I am not big, but I am told that I am a bit bigger than normal, both thickness and length.
