With the National Hockey League Entry Draft less than a week away and the potential for trades escalating this week and next with the free agency period looming, the salary cap will be going up by nearly $5 million next season.

Clubs and agents are being told next year's salary cap will be set at an upper limit of $64 million with a floor of $48 million.

During the 2010-11 season, the salary cap had an upper limit of $59.4 million.

The league's cap - entering its seven season under the current collective bargaining agreement - has risen every year since the end of the NHL lockout when the cap was set at $39-million.

Can ANYONE in here seriously tell me if hockey players are actually deserving of salaries like this??

Yes. That's part of the economy! Lots of economic aspects will prove!
Sums it up perfectly, pro athletes, actors, musicians only command that kind of money if they are in demand. For every Tiger Woods or U2 there are 1000's who never make the big time.

The hockey fan can`t win. The salary cap goes up which drives the ticket prices up and the increased revenue drives the cap evan higher....talk about a vicious circle

No...BUT they deserve their pay more than NBA, MLB, or NFL players...

Yes, those people end up bagging my groceries or giving Hunka a tug at the local Bathe House...

This means that there's less chance for Canada to get the CUP! :(
Why Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. Will be happy they can sign more players. All can easily match the cap.

Sure when you are the best at anything you get paid a lot. If you are one of the best in the world in a sport, thousands of people will pay big money to watch......well ya you get paid.

My season tickets have been the same price 4 years in a row.
Now we pay hst instead of gst, so that does suck.

The problem is, the floor being so high. If teams lose money already, an extra 3-4 million on the floor, only hurts.
I haven't checked out all the teams cap room.
But what happens if some shit team like say........Florida, already has the majority of the roster signed for next year.
Maybe needs a couple 4th liners and a Dman. Now they have to find somewhere to spend this money.

As far as the Canucks, that means they could sign all their current D back, assuming they are getting rid of Ballard somehow.
Cody will be on the team and he gets paid 1.6. But other than that I dont know.
Its going to be a good year for free agents me thinks

With recent statistics, Vancouver and Montreal are the only teams that have the highest chance to get into the playoffs!
But the chance of getting into the finals is the lowest!

I am lost.....
The salary cap, and the upcoming increase in the cap, have nothing to do with why Toronto and Calgary missed the playoffs

Then you don't get quite good players. And therefore, the team has less eager-to-get-in players. For example if you want Mario Lemiux, I don't think any Canadian teams can afford him!
