I got my laptop from Dell and have been very happy with the customer service. As to the actual laptop, it all depends what you want to do with it!!!

how computer literate are you? do you want to easy
exchange? I would start at London Drugs and work
your way out from there ... they don't have the best
prices but they have zero questions asked exchange
or return and if you get the right guy, good info.

what features do you need? does it sit at home
or go with you?

Dell isn't the best, not on price or product, and certainly
not on customer service (I find London Drugs to be very
good).

More info from you means better info from us.

Does anyonehave any suggestions on a new laptop
I'm quite happy with my new Sony Vaio. I realize that there's a premium built in for the name but the machine is fricking solid as a rock, looks good, pretty decent performance, there tech support has been surprisingly good (answered my stupid single click question via email within 2 hours), runs cool and based on reviews on CNet, etc. others feel the same way.

Good call! Heads above those cock gobblers at Future Slop or BestBuy.

The only other advice I'd have is buy a name brand (i.e. dell, hp, toshiba, sony, etc.) and not some private branded clone. Fine to do that with desktops where finding replacement parts isn't an issue but best of luck getting an additional power supply, cd-drive, etc. from the hong-wu computer company located in Upper Gansue.

To me it's a no bainer buyin a MAC now. My 15" Mac book pro is solid through and through. Under 30 second boot up tme and no need to run a stupid antivirus program. Lets see windows come close to that!!!

Also if needed it's no problem running Windows on your MAC laptop anyways.

I've bought my 3 last laptops at LD,, the price was even better than Torture Shop. Right now I am on my 4th Toshiba. The current one is about 3 years old and is virtually bullet proof. I've spilled juice, milk, coffee and about $200 of Scotch on it over the years and it keeps on ticking. I've even dropped it once from the overhead compartment on a plane.

As much as I liked my iBook at the beginning I was a little disappointed in how it stood up (physically) over time. Granted I'm hard on my equipment but nothing too terribly extreme but after just over a year things like keyboard failure, separation of glued parts like the display shell, etc. were annoying. Also a pain in the ass since I had to hunt for Mac versions of the software I have on my Windows based PC's. That said, if I were to recommend a computer to an absolute novice hands down would be for a Mac. As you mentioned the setup is fricking easy as can be, UI is more intuitive then Windows and harder to get fucked over by viruses, spyware, etc.

I recently bought a Macbook Pro at LD. I'm happy with the machine. Runs XP, MAC OS-X, and even Linux. Of the six laptops I have owned, this is the most versatile laptop I've ever had.

Nothing wrong with LD - but they do vary from store to store. Oh and they will price match. Get the price at FS and then buy it at LD. The problem with LD is warranty. Because they just resell they just offer basic extended warranty where they box up your product and send it away. Your laptop could be gone for a month. Say what you want about Dell, but for the $, no one can beat their next day onsite warranty. As far as Dell not being the best on price or product.........really depends what model you buy. There are Lattitude, Inspiron, and XPS. Each with different models underneath (screen size, processors, features). Lattitude is business class, Inspiron is consumer, and XPS is for the high end geek. The XPS systems usually rank in the top 4 for speed/performance.

Gateway 8510GZ

My Gateway 8510GZ is the best laptop I have owned out of 3.
It is 1.2 years old & still runs almost like new. (but I should reformat soon)
Graphics card is ATI mobility X700 (factory) & is capable of running F.E.A.R. at above meduim settings. - Impressive!
17" widescreen ultrabrite
Average Battery life = 3hrs
Full size keyboard including number pad - nice
built in speakers suck! - I bought external

Read review here:

I normally would not have purchased a Gateway but must say I am impressed with the build quality & performance.
price I paid ???
$1699.99 at Best Buy
opted for the 3yr. replacement warranty. + $149.00

For the money, I have not found anyone with a machine that even comes close!
Good Luck on your search & I recommend using the website I linked to help.

since when? i have an extended warranty with them and its
basically 'in-store' replacement with the same or better.

The 'boiler-plate' "We will replace the product if the product is
found to be defective during normal usage. This is a one-time
replacement only. In the even the specific product is no longer
available we may provide you with a subsitute or equivalent
value or greater functionality or value ..."
