dumb question
Is no one pissed about this subject. Just so you have a better idea, let me let you know that I work in retail (unfortunately but anyways) so lets practise some math. Avg. price of cigs $9.00x75% tax = 6.75x210avg/dayx365=510,557.50. FOR ONE SINGLE STORE!!!!! just think about it for a second. That # is an average of the calgary market in which there are 73 stores. thats 37 million from one company. Our government no matter what they claim is overflowing in our hard earned dollars but what do we do? We just bend over and lube up. At least in poorer countries, if the powers that be go to far, they protest... quite possibly violently. I remeber reading in the sun paper ofsome collumnist bitching that when a hospital was torn down here (can't recall which one because i have only recently returned here) that 4-5 people showed up to protest although this hospital was still needed. WOW! Now I am in now way suggesting that violence is the key to get attention in order for our extremely rich gov body to actually listen to the people but if more people took interest in politics and learned to say no for once to ridiculous wage increases.. maybe they'd get the hint? or am i being too naive?

I have no idea what you're pissed about? Is it the cost of cigarettes? Is it the fact that one company can make a lot of money selling cigarettes? Is it the fact government collects a lot of taxation revenue from selling cigarettes? Is it that people are smoking?

Please explain.

dumb question
overflow of tax revenue

That dollar figure is tax dollars... without gst which is a tax on top of tax. But think of the magnitude of that figure country wide.... a few billions wouldn't be too far off and thats just off of smokes. Not to mention every liter of gas sold, case of beer/bottle of booze, 649 and scatch and lose ticks, property taxes...list could go on and on. But it's very apparent everyone in power stopped counting the cash simply because there's too much of it. Thus their raise.
