Dental work in Mazatlan is top notch, comparable quality to Canada. I have the receipts for the following:

6 root canals at a cost of $10,800 pesos.
Core reconstruction, 4 teeth: $2000 pesos.
Crowns and bridges (zirconia prettau), 17 units: $107,000 pesos.
Ceramic crown, 1 unit: $4500 pesos.

The patient (Canadian, not me) is very satisfied. 1 Canadian dollar is equal approximately to 12 Pesos. Average cost of dental work in Mazatlan is roughly 1/3 to 1/4 Canadian prices. For a simple comparison, a root canal + crown is just under $700 CDN. A recent root canal + crown done here in Vancouver cost me $2100.

Also: 1 bdrm condo at a marina in Mazatlan $650 USD / mo, not including utilities. This is a quality condo used by tourists.

If you have a serious interest, PM me for more details and contact info.

Medical Tourism

The above info is a good example of the booming medical tourism to places such as Mexico, South Korea, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Thailand, and even Cuba. Malaysia alone averages more than 500,000 medical tourists annually. Of course, a large part of those medical tourists are Americans due to the large savings on medical and dental work. With about 40 Million Americans without a medical plan, expect medical tourism to increase way much more to those countries after the highly-conservative US Supreme Court overturns Obamacare. Maybe next time they'll be investors opening such hospitals in Nicaragua or Bali.

Remember to go to where the puck is going and not where the puck is. ;)

Puerto Vallarta/Vancouver
Funny this topic came up because I'm in Puerto Vallarta right now and just had a root canal done a few weeks ago. It was 2500 pesos which is $190 Canadian. I have a temporary crown on that tooth right now and will have a permanent one put on next week. Overall the whole process will cost me 8250 pesos ($629 Canadian) which included a teeth cleaning. I don't know if that's a lot or not because I was covered in Canada. I didn't want to get the root canal done. But I was in serious pain and really didn't have a choice.

:pound: its been a booming biz for my Dentist. After I got my teeth cleaned he told me he had a 2 1/2 Hr appt to redo some Mexican work. Probably going to run the guy $5K. Then he has the Dental Surgeon appt to take care of the infected gums etc.

Some things in life you can cheap out on and IMHO your health is never one of them.

This brings up a huge issue I have with our Health Care system. I firmly believe that dental should be covered to some extent by our Care Card. Dental health has a HUGE effect on our overall physical health, it's all connected, yet not covered?
It's the dentists who have successfully fought being included with the rest of the medical system. They set their own annual rates and deal with the insurance companies as to what would be covered or not by insurance.

If you are on social assistance you would get the full dental plan paid.

I have never had any dental work done in another country nor do I know anyone who has but I will say the prices quoted for the dental work in Mexico is super cheap compared to Canada if you dont have a dental plan....what is scary is if you get bad work done that falls apart a short time later.

As for the UBC dental school route I will say that is a super smart idea.....unless of course you wind up with a stoner medical student who is prone to fuckups and is only passing his/her exams via cheating....my oh my that is a scary situation

Dental work is expensive in Canada in general though....a cleaning and a dental exam will cost over $400 on average and that is a huge dent to the average person's paycheck who makes less than $15 an hour....throw in something like a root canal with a crown and it adds up real fast....throw in something complicated like a tooth that has fractured down the side and requires gum lowering and root planing as well as a post to build up the tooth as well as a crown and suddenly you have a crippling dental bill of $8000 to save one tooth....YIKES!!!!!!!

Glad I have a dental plan :)
