Most people think of a stalker as being of the opposite gender, or sexual in nature. A stalker is simply someone who devotes their time to damaging your reputation and compromising your sense of security.
I was stalked in 2005 and it changed my outlook to the internet. Here's my story...
I had a profile on MySpace, and participated in some of the groups. I rubbed a guy the wrong way, and we'd verbally spar on occasion. Eventually, things got worse and his attacks more personal and hurtful. He followed me into my other groups and attacked me there. He made friends with my friends, to learn more about me.
When it began to make me feel paranoid, I ignored him altogether. That only made it worse. Being MySpace, he knew my name and city, and had some pictures of me.
I got phone calls at 2 am from guys looking for a male prostitute. My stalker placed a Craigslist ad in my city. I had to contact CL to have them weed out anything that cross referenced to my data.
Then my stalker made profiles on LavaLife, Friend Finder, etc. He met women using my data and photos, set up dates at coffee shops in my city, and gave them my phone number the day of the meeting. I had a couple of angry girls call to chew me out. I had to contact each of these dating sites to be weeded out again.
For a year, I avoided the internet. It robs you of security and peace of mind.
(These sites now have security measures to avoid this type of abuse, but these terrorists just find new loopholes)
Then a friend showed me how easy it is to get someone's ID if they want it. You may have a fake name, and never give your personal info out, but when you look at someone's entire body of posts, it paints a detailed picture. Several small facts lead to medium sized facts. Medium sized facts lead to big facts, and the big ones identify you.
Most people here may say, "I don't have the time to stalk anyone". It's not a matter of HAVING the time, it's MAKING the time. If someone pisses you off and you want revenge, you're halfway to being a stalker. The rest is in the power you feel with every fact you learn as you get closer to their ID.
As soon as someone in a group shows hostility towards me, I'm gone. In real life, I stand up to conflict. But on the internet, your reputation can be damaged. Your best option is to have the admin delete your profile. This deletes your posts, which contain enough to fuck you up.
JNEWTON, get your profile deleted, even if you have to threaten the admin.
I left PERB recently because I sensed a strange hostility. Perhaps I over reacted, but I'd rather over-react than go through that Myspace ordeal again.
