Yes, virus particles can get through masks, but the point isn't to be 100% effective. Masks reduce how far you spread the virus into the air and how much virus people are exposed to. People exposed to less virus particles are less likely to get sick and have fewer symptoms even if they do.

Which makes me question why are they filling every seat on a plane?

I wear a mask when directed. My problem is, within minutes of putting on a mask my nose starts to run uncontrollably and my eyes water up to the point it makes seeing difficult.
LOL what sick fuck "likes" that you have issues while wearing a face mask?!?!

That's not a normal response to wearing a face mask. You may want to consider checking for underlying issues.

Are you wearing a n95? I was using a cloth mask with a charcoal insert for most of the year then recently got a box of n95s. HUGE difference.

I use the generic ones, blue on one side, white on the other. My solution is, I just don't go inside buildings anymore except my own.

The other problem I deal with is, I start to feel like I am in some kind of dystopian world. No laughter, can't see smiles, everyone looks miserable. By the time I'm done I'm a depressed mess. Another reason to just stay away.
