...I'm not making this up.

The Liberals released a series of attack ads this week which have, by all accounts, backfired badly. Particularly the "soldiers with guns" ad.

All the ads were personally approved by Martin himself.

On the plus side, they have spawned a cottage industry of parodies as Canadians enjoy themselves for one last time at the Liberals expense.

For example:

Stephen Harper has a dog.

You know who else had a dog?

Hitler.

Adolf Hitler.

That's who.

Did Stephen Harper train his dog to attack racial minorities on command?

We don't know.

He's not saying.

Choose Your Canada.
or
Stephen Harper ate at a Tex-Mex place once.

You know what the "Tex" in Tex-Mex stands for?

Texas.

George W. Bush's home state.

And you know who else would have liked Tex-Mex food if he were alive today?

Adolf Hitler.

We're not making this up.

Choose your Canada.

The fact is

Martin approved the script and not the actual commercial. However given the script why in hell would have approved it? Why in fuck did the Liberals even go ahead with such an ad?

Oh yah, they're desperate.

Really though, if it wasn't for that one particular ad then I think the Liberals would actually be regaining strength. Perhaps not enough to squeak out another minority, but cutting into the Tories lead. The rest of those ads likely would not then be part of a controversy.

In the end the Liberals have only themselves to blame. One national columnist, The NP's Don Martin I think, commented that in 2004 the Liberals nearly lost and only because of a major Tory fuck-up (the kiddie porn accusation) the Liberals managed to win. Martin has the same campaign team running this campaign and my aren't they a talented lot.

I simply can't understand why it is that we have to settle for shit in this county when it comes to politics.

The level of politics (and who wins) depends on how distasteful we find attack ads. It is really sad, and there is no outcome likely that anyone is going to find close to acceptable (except those Conservative supporters that will be briefly happy if Harper gets a minority win, or Bloc supporters that only care about Quebec). We will be back in shit with nothing good getting done no matter what happens.

I'm sure this little point has gotten lost in the shuffle, but the "soldiers with guns" ad never actually aired. The television airtime it's gotten has been during many, many news broadcasts reporting on (um, creating?) the controversy.

From the Globe and Mail:

...the ad, which was posted briefly this week on the Liberal Party website but has not been broadcast.
Full Story

I bet if you ask people though, 99 out of 100 wouldn't know that.
