just start googling reviews on what you want to buy. Chances are some body on the net has reviewed it. Don't forget about epinions.com. Also Dell is pretty kick ass when it comes to lap tops, I just hate the way they can only be purchased online.

I've had both. Both a sony viao and currently a Toshiba sat p20. Personally, I find the toshiba to be better, a total work horse. The viao's are nice, but I did find that sony likes to use "sony" software, load up the computer with it and then charge you more for the laptop.

Go to costco and see if they have both. You can buy a compter there, use it for 6 months and return it with no questions asked.

I've got a Toshiba with a Centrino processor that's been a reliable so far. I bought the brand because I knew it was supposed to be near bulletproof.

Sony and Toshiba are both good companies, so it's hard to definitively say either company is better for you... chances are they both have a laptop that will fit your needs.

It would be more useful if you can tell us what you want to do with your laptop and what your budget is and maybe what choices you have narrowed your search down to. Laptops come in such a wide choice of models these days that selecting one is a lot like buying a car -- it's all about finding the right fit. For example, you can get the tiny 5 pound laptops that you can carry around all day and won't put a dent in your shoulder, or you can get the 8 or 9 pound desktop replacement models that will have a big screen and tons of power but have a shorter battery life and aren't meant to be carried around. Both can cost quite a bit, but in one instance you are paying a premium for portability, in the other you are paying a premium for performance and features.

I have a toshiba satellite last summer and got excellent service the couple of times I called their support line, if that makes a difference to you. Also, at Future Shop, they threw in a free HP printer with it. I don't know if that deal is still available though.

Toshiba no comparison.
I have a Satellite A50 for the past year. No problems. Any minor problems were fixed quickly by the help line.

Sony was way to fragile. Sony also likes too much Sony only software IMHO.

Buy Toshiba

Personally, I don't trust Toshiba. They lost a $2 billion dollar class action lawsuit from their customers for knowingly using defective parts...

Dells have the lowest failure rate in the industry.
