One-quarter of Vancouver’s female sex trade workers infected with HIV

By SOUNDOFF 5 MAR 2009 COMMENTS(18) SOUNDOFF

VANCOUVER - Twenty-six per cent of Vancouver’s female sex trade workers are infected with HIV, as are 17 per cent of the city’s injection-drug users, a new B.C. study shows.

Sounds pretty dubious, unless they publish a little more detail about their method of determing their findings. ...and only 520 sex workers in Vancouver?

The headline might be believable in the DTES, but I think it is full of shit. It doesn't seem that it was based on/extrapolated from test results at all.

I also can't find this in the on-line version of the sun, or in the Harm Reduction Journal, which they say published it. The organization and journal referred to seem to be reputable, but it sounds pretty made up. I bet I could find 520 sex workers just be researching all of the online and published ads.

"The study.... is the first in Canada to estimate the per-capita prevalence ranges for high risk groups, using United Nations/World Health Organization software, 2006 Statistics Canada data and other sources such as population surveys."

I just noticed it is a year old, but it is not searchable in the Journal quoted. Doesn't sound like it was based on any facts at all, including surveys of DTES sex workers.

I think it's probable that the stats come from people who attended the Health Unit for a check up or for treatment. Since we know that there are many more than 520 sex workers in the Lower Mainland, it is clear that many sex workers are not getting regular check ups for STDs.
Nope. Not at all clear about anything whatsoever.

Don't know where you found it, but it wasn't in today's Vancouver Sun -- it's 2010 now. My bet is you copied it from some email you just got.

I think someone posted this last year. I find it to be a totally believable fact amongst the street based sex workers, especially since many of them are also intravenous drug users. And yes very poor journalism that they didn't make that distinction.

@the Meat Market!!!lol
we all talked about this last year. we know the people who did the study and it is based solely on street entrenched sex workers mostly in the DTES. the study was intended to asses a number of factors contributing to higher hiv rates and inability to access health care and other resources contributing to harm of this vulnerable population.

it was worded as such by an abolitionist reporter hoping to scare pooners and workers into retirement.

once again. this study was conducted through engagement of street sex workers only. no indoor workers took part.
studies have over and over shown that indoor sex workers are far more safe, healthy and stable than outdoor workers.

HN addressed this last year..

The researchers are trying to bring attention to the growing level of HIV/AIDS in the Vancouver area. They have not done their own research but instead have placed data from other studies into a computer program (UNAIDS/WHO Estimation and Projection Package (EPP)).

The groups that they looked at were injection drug users (IDU), men who have sex with men (MSM), street based female sex trade workers (FSW), and the general population.

I believe it is good that they have brought the issue forward as they are recommending that “evidence-based prevention and harm reduction strategies should be expanded”.

I think a problem with the research is with their use of female sex trade workers (FSW). The data they have used is from the following studies.

Strathdee SA, Patrick DM, Currie S, et al.: Needle exchange is not enough: lessons from the Vancouver injection drug use.

Rekart ML: Trends in HIV seroprevalence among street-involved persons in Vancouver, Canada (1988–1992).

Shannon K, Bright V, Duddy J, et al.: HIV vulnerabilities of women engaged in survival sex work in Vancouver`s Downtown Eastside.

This indicates that the group of FSW they are estimating for are street based survival sex workers in the downtown eastside. The majority of sex work is indoors e.g. independents, escorts, massage parlors etc. Their estimates for HIV among FSW would not cover this majority group.

I think they had the best intentions of expressing concern for at risk groups. I just think that anyone reading the article could think that this applied to all sex workers. This does have the potential of keeping the stigma around sex work rather than helping it.

Let us know if you want us to expand on a topic. Remember if you would like to ask me a personal question just send me a PM.
