I am originally from Québec. What passes for snow here doesn't even get mentioned on the news back there. I have good all-season radials, and I know how to drive in the snow. I just laugh when school is cancelled for just 3-4 inches of white stuff on the ground!

I still have fond memory of being tailgated on Décarie Boulevard driving 15kms above the speed limit with 2 feet of snow on the ground. BC drivers will not survive in Quebec, that's for sure...

Been driving in Alberta for over 40 years and have never bought a set of winter tires yet. All season radials and front wheel drive work for me. Only got stuck twice last year and both times in front of the house. 4 WD guys got stuck trying to get me out, lol!

I really only drive around Vancouver, so I just stick with my all seasons. If I knew that I would be doing some out of town travel to say Whistler or the Interior, I would put snow tires on, and get chains to have in my trunk. My tires are a few years old now, so if we get any big dumps I'll probably leave the car at home (or wherever I happen to be).
However, I do really enjoy driving in the snow, so when the finances allow it I will for sure buy a set of snow tires!

I am in Calgary and I know how bad it gets here....that being said I had a new set of Michelin's intalled a few weeks ago...thus far the city has had 2 light dustings of snow with the most recent being last night that was 1 CM deep if that.....of course first thing this morning the city had the fucking gravel trucks out for this...spraying gravel over barely covered roads when it is not needed.....so fucking nice to have all that gravel hitting the front end of my new car and chipping the paint....yet when January gets here and we get hit with an actual snow storm that delivers 6 inches of snow overnight and every road is a compacted sheet of snow the city will do jack shit.

I'm sure you meant Southern BC drivers, yes?

Anyone from Northern BC who drives to work in the "bush" would handle Quebec quite fine, I'm sure.

All season tires are effing useless!

A very poor compromise.

I run 2 sets of tires and rims. On a 4x4. Not much in the way of weather holds me back ... unless I want it to
Seems like a lot of work changing them back and forth. Why not just haul out that little snowmobile you were telling me about..................

Too hard on the back ;p

After thinking about it a bit more I have to say southern BC drivers are pretty good. Anybody who can drive 100-110 kph into a snow storm has my respect.

Lunacy needs to be respected...
You guys don't get it. It's not the southern BC drivers who can't drive in the snow, its all the people who have moved here from the Greater Toronto area where it snows so much they never get their car out fo the driveway to gain experience, or the people who have moved here from parts of the world where snow is just something they see in the movies. You can see most of the former at Rogers Arena whenever the Maple Leafs are in town.

I love driving in the snow, just because we so seldom get snow here. Actually I was out driving around yesterday when I see the first snow flake hit ground. Nope, haven't got my snow tires up yet. They are still sitting in my locker, perhaps next weekend when I get around to doing it. The all season is still okay for yesterday's light dusting.

I just don't trust all seasons in snow.
Does anyone know if your in an accident can ICBC hold you at fault for not having winter tires ??
From ICBC's site.....

ICBC responds to questions about winter tires and insurance
November 22, 2010

Winter tires are not mandatory in B.C. but ICBC recommends their use in snowy conditions, particularly if you live in an area where you would normally expect a lot of snow. In snowy conditions, driving without proper winter tires may not be the wisest or safest decision, but it does not affect a customer’s insurance coverage or eligibility to make a claim.

Drivers are always responsible for ensuring their vehicles are properly equipped for road conditions, just like ensuring your wipers and headlamps are working well on dark and rainy nights. Driving without winter tires will not void your insurance in the event of a claim or mean that you are automatically at-fault for a crash. If you get in a crash where winter tires could have helped, it may be a deciding factor in determining whether or how much you are at-fault.

Keep in mind that the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure can also designate that winter tires are required on certain roads and highways. This typically happens during the fall and winter months in Northern B.C. and the Southern Interior. If you are driving on these roads without winter tires, police can ticket you and make you turn back.

Winter tires are particularly recommended in areas of B.C. that experience substantial snowfall because they deliver better snow and ice performance. The tread designs on winter tires provide much better traction for driving in winter road conditions. Please visit icbc.com for more information and tips on buying winter tires and driving in poor conditions.

Winter tires alone are not enough – drivers need to make smart driving decisions and adjust their driving to the road conditions. In winter weather, drivers should allow more time for travelling and most importantly, slow down and keep your distance from other vehicles so you can see more of the road.

For customer enquiries on winter tires and insurance, please call 604-661-2800 (Lower Mainland) or 1-800-663-3051 (elsewhere in B.C.) between 8 am and 7pm Monday to Friday or 9am to 5pm Saturday.

All season tires are not an approved snow tire. If there is more than 3 cm. of snow on the road, your claim can be denied for improper tires (all season). Buy a set of All Weather tires, which have the snow-flake symbol on the sidewall, and are an approved winter tire, but can be used all year round. Many tire manufacturer's make them now, just be sure to ask for All Weather tires, and not All Season.

Nokian, a Swedish tire manufacturer developed these, and are among the best! Michelin & Goodyear also make All Weather tires. For our weather here in BC, these tires are the way to go....... A real winter tire, and you don't have to switch them out come spring time, or buy another set of tires & rims.

Clarification, Please:

The paragraphs referring to All Weather tires - is that also from the ICBC website, or it it information you are passing on for our consideration?

Sorry for the late reply...... Been busy these days.

The paragraph after the ICBC article is my contribution. I copied the ICBC article & pasted it in the reply, but it came out different, in terms of looks. Sorry for the confusion.

If your into anything performance/car related you'd never buy all season. Triple 8's in the summer and snows in the winter.
