I've been laid-off for a short while here, and have been trying to get another job. For my background, I've got my Class 1 driver and experience driving very heavy loads. I've called places, but it seems like getting a job is like pulling teeth these days.

Anyone having or know of similar problems?

I left a good paying job hauling chemicals in the fall so I could spend more time at home over the winter months. My plan is (was?) to return to my old company driving OTR in April.

Problem is, most of our customers are oilpatch related so everything is slowing down, even Fort Mac, which was a very steady run to Suncor (Firebag) and Syncrude (Mildred Lake). We used to send a couple Super B's a day up there when the economy was hitting on all cylinders.

I took a local job driving bus for the winter, but it doesn't pay near as good as OTR. Good luck finding something guys.

Why not go to school full time for 4 years...hope you pass and can handle the stress... and get a real education...then apply for work and go for REAL interviews!

Settle down there slick, no need to be beating down a guy looking for a job.
Did your Mom not have dinner ready for when you got home from work today? What else could have made you this grumpy?

I hate ppl that complain about being laid off when they were overpaid in the first place...

Instead, they should be thankful for what they had...

InTheBUm,

That's a dumb ass statement if I've ever heard of one. In the industry I'm in we've laid off shitloads of engineers, accountants, etc....p.eng, masters, phd you name it.
If there isn't work, there isn't work.

Since you sound so smart, can you give some advice for the people that already have 4-8 years of education?

Genius, what the f*ck are they suppose to do??!!

Anyone working up at Fort Mac is grossly overpaid!

Unemployment overall is still at a reasonable level. Those people who are unemployed should swallow their pride and work 3 shit jobs and 120 hours a week!

Not talking about Fort Mac. If you've been living in a cave the past few months, the US economy is in a major recession. They are our biggest exporter.

It's just a matter of time. Give these people a break, they could have family etc to take care of.

I appreciate your insight InTheBum, but even post-secondary education these days doesn't change night to day. I'm in my 20's, and some people I know have graduated with their degree and can't find a job without work experience.

Not asking for sympathy, as it sounds like alot of people are going through the same thing. Dump 20G's into education and work for minimum wage would be a setback at the moment for me.

Good luck to everyone, keep your chins up.

LOL, try working there yourself Bumfuk.
They pay high wages for a reason, they need REAL men to go there. If it was so easy, for that kind of money....everyone would be trying to work there.
Lotus land is where you belong, leave the real work to the men who can do it.

Oh...but wait smartass, the only problem is....you have to live in FortMac!!! Never mind quality of life. You can make a shitload of money if you want to work over in the Middle East!! I'll pass an let the real men do that
Well I have worked in fort mac, and lived out of camps. Yes the money is/was good but camp life for the 21/7 shifts sucks. Plus unless you are willing to pay through the nose(2-3x increase in rates for shift change) to fly in and out at the end of your shift you risk your life on the roads or stay in camp for your days off. It is a tough life and if you want any kind of life aside from hooking up with cleaning staff out there it wasn't worth it to me.

As for the jobs over seas, any clue as to how you go about applying for those jobs? I am willing to risk death for a few months if it can get me out of this debt that I have. Can only end 2 ways and either way I won't have to worry anymore.

in the bum...take your head out of your ass!

Some of us work harder in 40 hours than you do in 120.......you must be one of those sponsored workers...who sews buttons on jackets like the rest of the people who ride the short bus with you, either that or your helmuts on to tight!

I have the utmost respect for the men and women who do things like farm, raise cattle, cut wood, and that kind of shit, and they should be the most well payed people in our society, second maybe to doctors. Lawyers, accountants, all the paper pusher type stuff, all those jobs aren't even real. They're man made. They're not required for life. They're a man made solution to a man made problem.

There's 3 types of work.
People who provide us with things we need to live (see above).
People who make those things easier (the food service/hospitality sector).
And the people who make the first thing more difficult with man made run-around.

At the end of the day, every man and woman just wants a nice place to live, food on the table, and a little leisure time with your loved ones. All the #3 category just makes that task more difficult by making us have to have more money to accomplish what we want because they're standing in our way.

Get your priorities straight for god sakes!!!

No stereotyping

It's a funny world we live in. I'm in my mid 40's struggled and got myself a degree. For lack of a better word "a friend" of mine who's in her late 20's got pregnant when she was in her teens and struggles to make ends meat. Still tries to get an education, but is up against trying to feed and cloth her daughter. (my challenge is spelling but I digress) anyway, I also grew up with my mom trying to raise three kids on a single income. She did so without complaining and sacrifices I can only imagine.

So those of us either born with a silver spoon or who clawed our way to the top or happen to be guys..we are fortunate, economically speaking.

Let's not look down on those who didn't get an education and actually have to work for a living or struggle to feed children.

Having said that, education or not, if you actually enjoy what you do, you may get paid for it, but it won't seem like work.

True. Even if you get a Master's/Phd in Biological Sciences you're worse off then when you started. The politics of even trying to get funding for your project are horrible, not to mention the 10-20yr wait for an associate professorship.

Sure it's difficult to find a high paying job. However, I've NEVER ever had a problem getting a job. As long as your mind is open and your body is able, there will always be a job waiting to be filled. I've done everything from door-to-door sales to accountancy. Sure, the jobs open now may not be the most glorious, but if you have bills, you have bills. Downsize. I went from 3k/month expenses to less than 1k. It's not that hard, you just have to suck it up and surround yourself around positive people.

you know an education means nothing,
i know several millionars that never graduated highschool.

every one pushes university, but university doesn't really mean a hell of alot.

if its just about money, you look at the economy, see whats hot whats booming and whats needed and there you go.
and quite frankly
it has little or very little to do with going to university, in alberta, any way,
the millionairs i know, learned a skill and then opened up there own business,
just that simple.

the smarted guy i know, and fuck he is smart,
never graduated highschool. and he owns a multi million dollar business.
one of the dumbest fucks i know also owns a multi million dollar business,
he is just a work -aholic. and not afraid to fail,
he started three business before he got it right.
he also never graduated highschool.

bill gates was a drop out,

why do you want to go to university for then years if there is no fucking job at the end of it.
