Good luck!
Montreal is great- the shopping! the food! the nightlife!

But cheap accomodations....
The room I got was worse then my dorm room and I was paying $100+ a night (last February) but it was downtown (right next to Chinatown).

That would be the Travelodge. It's a three star hotel at $99 a night with free internet, but it's located RIGHT WHERE YOU WANT TO BE. It's on Boulevard Rene Levesque and connects with Boulevard Saint-Laurent. Rue Sainte Catherine is one block north, so it's near where the action is. Chinatown and Old Montreal are within walking distance. I spend one night and two days in Montreal and I had an absolute blast.

I forgot...that's where I stayed and it was fine. Nice location, clean place, internet, breakfast included, close to everything within walking distance and a pretty good rate. Good recommendation, because the Best Western further west will run you $140 a night at least.

In January? aaah.. dress warm.

To compare hotel prices check:

www.expedia.ca
www.travelocity.ca
www.hotels.ca

You can also try bidding for one on www.priceline.com Basically you specify an area of the city (I believe..), whether you're looking for 3* or 4* (I think you can select a range) and then bid! You can bid pretty low to start because you could be surprised what you get. The only thing is when you bid, you have to provide your credit card info and agree that if your bid is accepted by one of the hotels, your card is charged right then and there... No changing your mind. I tried once and got a really good deal although I don't like the whole leaving it to chance thing.. lol I like to pick the hotel. But you could get some really good deals if you want to give it a try.

You can also check www.merc.ca as they have a whole section with threads about every possible hotels with some pros and cons.

I'm not sure if you are planning on pooning but if you are, don't go too cheap on hotels because most of what is available and is good is outcall only and you won't find incalls like you can here. Not nearly as many and most of them not anything like what you can expect here or if you go for Montreal outcall agencies/indies instead.. Just to let you know... ;)

oh yeah.. Almost forgot my favorite. lol The last few times I went home and needed to rent a place to stay, I went for short term vacation rentals.. Basically like your own little apartment and some of them for cheaper than most hotels.. There are quite a few websites with listings for these, you can do a google search for more, but off the top of my head those I remember:

www.homeaway.com
www.perfectplaces.com

www.craigslist.org also has a section dedicated to these types of accommodations and some pretty good/nice places listed.

LaCreme! You're still here??
You've been so quiet!! I thought you'd left us for sure!

That meets my definition of cheap.
Being a port city, they have rats and cockroaches so don't do too cheap!
K.. I think that's a little exaggeration... lol
the only time I've ever seen a rat in my life is here in downtown Vancouver (east, of course) years ago, running down the street at night.

here, 4star downtown hotel for $99.. they have that same deal regularly as I got the same for a few nights last spring. It's nice and close to everything.

It's easy to find inexpensive accommodations in Montreal. Easier than it is here or Alberta, that for sure.. There are tons of cheap options..

If you use Priceline, have you looked at this site yet: www.biddingfortravel.com

If not, check it out. The site will give a somewhat updated listing of what hotels are used by Priceline in a given city, sorted by area and star category. So this would give you a better idea of what property you may "win" if your bid is successful. As well there are threads posted by users that indicate what rate they paid for their successful bids. So once you narrow down which area you want to stay in, you can use this site as a guide as to what hotels would likely be available and a ballpark idea of what to bid. The site also provides tips on how to go about bidding on priceline. The site really helps me when preparing for a trip.
