With all due respect:
1. Some web sites keep old ads forever, without any way to find that out (e.g. no date of posting/expiration). So the rate may be outdated.
2. Some ladies have different rates when they are touring, depending whether it's incall or outcall, etc. Web sites do not always reflect that.

I'd rather confirm a rate on the phone, than have the embarrassment of passing the pre-counted donation, and the lady discovering that it's 30 bucks less than what she expected. I can understand asking more subtle question, something like "are the rates on www.lady's-name.com current?", if the fee structure is complex, lots of extras, etc., but not asking at all? I think it is irresponsible.

And do you think those guys are in the lounge much less on perb?

Don't forget that some of the men you're dealing with aren't exactly smooth and or comfortable with women for whatever reason, and rates/locations/availability/etc are potential topics of "small talk" so to speak to ease their tension. Potentially a way to get a feel for the lady.

Personally I do email with touring women. I ask available times, and clarification on rate if it's ambiguous on their website (one mentioned this is my rate other costs may be incurred during tours - not exactly concrete info wouldn't you say). I'll only call after booking and I don't email without intent to book.

Let's not forget people have brain farts from time to time pooners and sp's alike.

It's like the "wash your balls" threads. The people that need to read that aren't here. And the ones here that don't wash their balls choose to be that way (don't ask me why). All those threads accomplish is to make someone like myself who for the most part holds up his end of the bargain properly not want to see you.
