Free Stanley

Ok, I know that most of us are sick and tired of hearing about the NHL lockout, but here's a website that has a pretty interesting concept. Maybe there's no shot of this happening, or maybe there's a crazy chance it could happen, I don't know. But maybe the best thing that could come of this is the threat of a potential legal action that could make both the NHL and the NHLPA realize that there is a third party that they need to keep in mind during negotiations... the fans!

Free Stanley

Free Stanley is a movement founded by three Edmonton Stanley Cup fans: Michael Payne, Mark Suits and Tom Thurston. We love hockey , we love the Stanley Cup and Stanley Cup playoff action. We want to make sure there are Stanley Cup playoffs this year and we don't think the NHL or the NHLPA should prevent the Cup from being awarded if the NHL season is cancelled due to the lockout.

If the season is scrapped, the Stanley Cup should then be awarded as a challenge cup to the best hockey team in Canada, which was Lord Stanley's original intent. We have a plan for the challenge cup that would see an end of season tournament with the winner of the Canada University Hockey Championship, the Memorial Cup winner, the Allan Cup winner (senior men's hockey), and the best team from among the Canadian minor professional hockey league teams in leagues such as the AHL and ECHL playing off for the Stanley Cup.

I think it would be a great idea. I really haven't watched NHL hockey since the early '90s. Its too boring and too expensive. The best thing that could happen would be for the NHL to be cancelled for about 3 years and maybe some perspective could be regained by both players and owners. For real hockey lovers, there is still lots available. For my part, I'm looking forward to next football (CFL) season.
