My late wife used to have a monkey. She said it could get into anything. There was no way to prevent a constant flow of damage. (lamps, plants, dishes, records, etc, etc).

I spent some time wondering why I feel there is more to this for me than "ooh! how sweet!" even if it was the immediuate reaction.

Then I realized: we know so littler about animal psychology, and our methods of research are limited, confined only to observation of natural states or experiments.

This tells us something about animal ability to bond and their emotions. But what? Can ethologists and socio-biologists eventually accumulate those anecdotal cases of bonding between species and get a deeper glimspe into how - and what - higher mammals may feel?
Will it have implications on how we see them?

Can anybody recommend good reading on those topics?
