A month ago I was drinking with some buddies, listening to their tales of woe as they prepared to face the possibility of imminent layoffs. I sympathized, and counted my blessings for the job security that I thought I had. A few short weeks later, and bam! -- I'm the one whose employer goes tits up. The demise wasn't a surprise, but the quick timing was. I thought the sumbitch would thrash around for months and months, but I guess somebody decided that it would be more humane to put the company out of its misery right away. Can't say I blame them.

I haven't collected EI since it was UI, so a little R&R might be nice. But knowing me, I'll try get back into the job market ASAP. It's the responsible thing to do. Plus, my bills are gonna start piling up faster than hell. Hopefully having the pooning budget disappear will be good motivation to get back to work!

Sorry to hear of the bad news there guys.

Unfortunately there is more bad economic times ahead & when the hyperinflation hits it will be like a return to the early 80's.

Save your money & pay off your debt - be smart.

I thought I had job security too and then late lasy year, out of the blue, BAM! Got a great package but it is going on 6 months and I am still looking! Anyone looking for a GREAT salesperson? I could sell sand to the Arabs and ice to Eskimos . . .

Got a couple of irons in the fire so hopefully something will come along soon. It really cuts into my play money not working!

You guys sound upset!

Personally, I would love to collect EI! I could easily cut my expenses and just relax for 10 months, then find another job.

You guys need to look outside your comfort zone...still tons of jobs out there...but the question is: Do you want to do them? Sounds like NO!

You are quick to judge there "In the Bum"! I have looked out of my comfort zone. I have looked at even working for a tabacco company! I have taken a part-time job to make ends meet. I have sent out resumes and I mean lots of resumes with very few responses. These are jobs I know I could do in my sleep. No reply back! Do you understand how demoralizing and frustrating this can be for someone who actually WANTS to work?

I am working with 5 Head Hunters here in Vancouver, one of which never returns emails or phone calls, maybe that should be I'm working with 4 Head Hunters, also head hunters in Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. I spend at least two hours a day scouring all the job boards on line, including the E.I site and have applied to what I am qualified for.

It is people like you who have a job and want to collect EI that really get under my skin!! So don't be so quick to say that I am not prepared to step out of my comfort zone.

FYI - You could do graveyard office cleaning...tons of opportunities. But let me guess, you can't work nights and you refuse to pick up garbage...

Also, I feel no sympathy for people who had it good, then bitch and complain when things actually don't go their way. eg. Autoworkers

I am sorry to hear these bad news from some of you Perbits. I sincerely hope that you guys will find whatever you are looking for out there.

Daedalus,
I am very impressed with your attitude of job searching. As long as you don't get frustrated and you will find a job and eventually a job that you enjoy. Just be positive!

IntheBum,

I think you should have empathy to those who were less fortunate at this moment and not being judgemental towards everyone. Yes, I agree that there are lots of jobs out there - but even more people going after one position - the ratio of unemployment over job position availability is huge.

God bless you all.:)

ITB - If one is a working professional what possible good does taking a job as a garbage collector serve.

Finding an alternate position requires time and effort. It may also require flexibillity to travel. Six years ago, I found myself without a position. The company where I had worked for many years closed its doors. It took three months to find a new position. I can assure you it was a very full time process that included a number of trips for interviews. It would have been silly for me to take short term employment such as garbage collection.

I've been down that road, and trust me 3 months to find a job really isn't bad at all. To land my first "real" job out of school took me about 9 months...many moons ago...I chose a crappy profession with few openings and have since moved on.

Unemployment is around 8% in the Lowermainland. Before the construction boom, it was about 6.5%. So really, 1.5 more people per 100 are looking for work, while comparing to "normal" times before the Boom.

In the Bum is one of those who sits comfortably in his job snickering at everyone else but has no clue of the difficulties faced by so many real people in the real world.

When he loses his job, he will sing a different tune.

Grow up- ITB.

Isn't it a shame when first cousins get married and have kids! In The Bum, I cannot wait until you are in the same position! Maybe you should arrange to get laid off/downsized collect EI and then try to find something.

I am pretty sure I could find work in 50 weeks...

But I understand, if you have a high paying job, its tough to settle on 15 hr or whatever the lame pay is...

Like I said previously, I've been down that road before so it happens to many of us!:)

For those sending out many resumes and getting no replies, the problem is that there are many who have also been laid off - so everyone's looking :(

Obviously certain industries have been hit harder than others.

Good luck to those in the position of starting over! Perhaps you will be happier at the next company you work for.... almost everything happens for a reason, and you may be happier at the next company!
