Do you try to talk or be social during massages?

I try to be social and have a conversation during a massage but it seems that I'm simply supposed to relax and enjoy the moment without talking. Sometimes the masseuse even has her eyes closed, which could either mean she is into the moment or just wants it to be over. At times there are also language barriers where I wish there could be more connection or chemistry.

Look left. Way left.
For the first ten minutes I try to be a bit social and pleasant to make her feel more at ease with me. It usually helps as I'm a big guy that may make some people nervous. At 6'2"/220 I can be a little intimidating. It also can indicate what kind of session I'm in for and react accordingly.

I'm always social but that's because the only Times I get on a table for someone are for treatments from my sisters friend (physiotherapist) or an adjustment from my friend that's a chiropractor, someone who doesn't know what they're doing can mess you up pretty bad which is why I've been weary of the whole MP thing

I was disappointed the time I tried to small talk and give a compliment only to have her respond ,"no English"

If it is an RMT, I tend to be silent, unless the masseuse asks whether pressure is enough. I don't tend to be social with them as they only go that far.

As for non-RMT, i.e., the ones involved in the hobby, it is a case of depends. If it is the first couple of visits, I tend to be a bit sociable to try to ease the mood. But, once we know how things are, I tend to be more quiet, as I will be there then to enjoy the moment. However, there are corner cases where I know the masseuse likes to talk, I would go along. In general, it is a question of what I prefer. After all, I am the one paying at the end of the day.
