Here
Most people think of it as the force that brings something good to someone. Yet, it can also keep good fortune away.
The reason I ask is, I lead a pretty normal life and in the last couple of years I have had a miserable streak of bad luck , and I believe fate is the culprit.

I am not sure if I believe in fate, but I do know that I do believe that everything happens for a reason and that I learn something from everything that happens to me.

And by happening to me, I mean each and every little thing from walking down the street with my dog to listening to the news about what is happening elsewhere in the world.

I know that when I got real sick a number of years ago it was my body telling me to slow down and when I moved to BC and slowed down my body thanked me.

Bad luck is just bad luck, we all get our share and some deserve it more than others. Aswell as some peoples bad luck is rather trivial yet they act as if everyone should stop what they're doing and join hands in song or some fucking thing like that.

However I do believe in the right place at the right time belief. Theres no way to explain the right place at the right time other than just enjoy it.

Sometimes here, Sometimes there
I have come to believe that everything in my life has happened for a reason - to teach me something. In the last 10 years I have had my share of bad "stuff" (be it fate or karma) as well. It has taken literally years for me to see the lesson or the benefit that I received from some of that bad stuff - but it was there. The hard part is to tough it out and condition yourself to be accepting, with the knowledge that at some point you'll be able to shrug and say "another one of life's lessons learned". Hang in there.

Hmm...

Fate as in you are destined to meet that special someone? Or fate as in we are all born with certain gifts to give to the world and so must fulfill these gifts to be fulfilled?

You did mention a string of bad luck. I agree with Ingrid - "bad luck" is often a sign that you're doing the wrong things, that you're headed in the wrong direction for you. If you're headed in the right direction, then you have "setbacks" that you overcome.

I think it's also possible to have internal conflicts that seem to draw "bad luck" to you - because you subconsciously sabotage yourself, because the "vibe" you put out is negative. People often draw unhealthy partners to themselves in this way...which, again, is a sign that you need to fix yourself, not bad luck.

Hope your luck turns around!

It was my karma to steal your line Hifi. (=

Its weird...it has kinda crept up on me but I find myself slowing turning into more of a Buddhist than anything else. It wasn't something I have been actively pursuing just something that has seemed to grow inside me. Most intriguing actually. The concepts I know of Buddhism make much sense to me. Such as the whole karmic thing and the circle of life concepts.

According to palmistry,if you have a strong character, you can possibily change your own fate to good or to bad as Alex said your own choice of actions.

To destiny is a different matter. If you are destiny to meet a certain people,or if you are destiny to marry someone or the time is up. The mistry is ,that is beyond your control. e.g. I met my ex-wife at the airport lounge ; however, times up our marriage finished!

Call me a cynic, but I don't believe everything happens for a reason, and I don't believe in karma. The good man who gets hit by a car and dies doesn't learn anything from that. He didn't deserve it. It was just bad luck. Having said that, I hope I'm wrong. I hope there is some kind of reason to this world.

What doesn't kill you makes you strong!

Bad luck is just there to toughen you up, and teach you lessons.

Just study up on your sayings....the rolling stone gathers no moss, no good deed goes unpunished, et cetera and everything will make sense.

I believe in fate, but it's more like destiny.

Call me crazy, but I sometimes see into my future. Each time my vision represents a choice. I don't always recognize my vision and still make the wrong choices. Fate, yes I believe, but which direction we take once we get there depends on our choices.

I will summarize my thought in point forms :):
  • Pre/Post incarnational karma (as defined in religions) does not exist. Instant karma, however, does
  • We have choices in many matters, and with each choice a new path is presented along with its consequences and more future choices. There are also major lessons throughout life (these decisions were made before we were born) that we will face in spite of our current choices. When one digresses from these major milestones, one is reminded of the fact by encountering a series of obstacles, hoping that one will be back on track
  • Good/Bad luck usually comes in streaks because like attracts like. It is possible for some external factors to influence one's "luck." Though when it does happen, it usually means one is meant to experience it
  • We chose the way to leave this world (i.e. time/location/manner of death) before we were born. This is also an experience

That's all I could think of for now :D

Makhno's quote is very insightful ...

Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans.

It's even true if you say it this way ...

Life is what happens to us.

You reap what you sow. That being said, not all reap what they sow. And some reap what others sow. Yet others reap without any sewing done by anyone.

You are punished for your sins. Yet some are never punished for their sins. Yet some are punished having never transgressed that sin. And yet others are given light punishment for grave sins, and others are given heavy punishment for light sins.

Basically, there is no justice in this world. Don't count on good things happening because of your good deeds, or bad karma upon bad people. Don't count on society or laws to secure or redeem you or punish others.

You do things, good or bad, ultimately only because it feels good to you. If you are a good person, you feel good doing good things and feel bad doing bad things. Bad people feel good doing bad things and don't care about doing good things. If you think yourself a good person, you may also think that you are a moral person. But frankly, that's just a label.
