Cowboys in Paradise: Sex Tourism in Bali

Each year, thousands of women travel to Bali in search of paradise. And many find it in the arms of Kuta Cowboys, the bronzed beach ambassadors who've made the island one of the world's leading destinations for female sex tourists.

COWBOYS IN PARADISE gets between the sheets of Bali's 'holiday romance' trade to reveal some of the island's most closely-guarded secrets. What separates a Cowboy from garden-variety gigolos? How do women compensate him? Why are time management skills crucial to his success? And how does his family feel about his colourful ways?

The film also charts the typical trajectory of a Cowboy's life, from entry into beach life to his reign at the top of the tourist-industry chain, before following his heartbreaking descent into obsolescence. By the end, the myth of paradise is shattered and the viewer is presented with a more realistic proposition: Paradise is always elsewhere.

I think these Western women that go to Bali are pathetic...none are attractive and most have that Lesbo look!

But it's ok for ugly dudes to go to Thailand for the same thing?
Yes! Older guys chasing after young women is natural...

Older white women chasing after beach bums in Bali is just creepy as hell!

I'd do it...

If they pay was good enough. Send me to bali, all expenses paid. Give me a hut on the beach, and I'll charge $250 a pop. MSOG for the hour included... haha. I doubt those guys are getting paid anywhere near that though!

PS... check out the the actual link. There is a young sweedish girl that has partaken in the festivities.. So i guess it's not all old ladies.. Shes kind of cute.

Bali is truly that Mystical place as portrayed in Eat, Pray, Love. The people of Bali don't have a word for future, they don't think about tomorrow as most Westerners do. Bali attracts men and women who are not attached to things or people. Those who come to Bali allows life to lead them rather than be controlled by it. And the so-called Cowboys of Paradise, the Balinese culture, and the beautiful beaches serves as an escape for these women from their complicated lives. :) :)

It's not really surprising to see this. Everywhere I've travelled, whenever I come across women tourists, there's usually at least one of them who subconsciously (or consciously) looking for a romance with a local man. The irony in it all is that usually these guys they get in a fling with, are usually guys they would never give the time a day in their native country. If Bali is known as a safe female sex tourist destination, I suppose having a temporary cowboy makes sense as they should be safe, as opposed to going to a club and risking being date raped, raped, or kidnapped.

I thought the movie was pretty interesting for a lot of reasons. One of those is the big difference in how it makes most of us react in comparison to what has been brought up; the role reversal in cases like Thailand sex tourism. I'm not totally sure what I think of this because I do think some of the double standards are unjustified but there's more involved than just the way we have rigid views when it comes to gender roles and sex. Social context and beliefs also have a lot to do with it and our tendency to see things as being either black or white, without acknowledging that what we believe may apply to some individuals but that it might not apply at all or just partly to others. We tend to form opinions and then try to apply them to everyone, which isn't realistic. Not sure if the way I'm explaining this makes sense. lol

Some years ago, I went on vacation to Tobaggo with a gf. Watching the movie very much reminded me of my observations on that trip. It wasn't excessively popular as destination (not like the overcrowded places where all the resorts are) and there were lots of European girls, fairly young and not at all bad looking who seemed to travel there knowing and expecting to hook up. So naturally there were lots of local guys willing to help them out. haha And each one you talked to at the bar or who approached you at the beach, once they'd understood you weren't interested in hooking up with them and you'd chatted with them a while, would talk about their "girlfriend". The girlfriend was always from somewhere in Europe, they'd met her while she was on holiday and she'd visit again once a year or less. The rest of the time, they emailed or talked on the phone. This didn't stop them from approaching tourists; in fact they actually would go to the "airport" when flights were scheduled to arrive (small charters) to see the new arrivals!

It was really foreign to me and I found it so odd. I remember one guy who worked at the bar that was on the same property as our hotel. We'd chatted with him the entire time we were there and had been amused watching him and all the others try their luck with one girl after another, only to be introduced to his visiting girlfriend from Denmark near the end of our trip. All of a sudden, he was like a totally different person. My friend and I didn't really get it and I didn't really ask details but some of these guys obviously had no other occupation, seemed to be at the beach every day, always socializing with various female tourists. A few of them told us or introduced us to their European or North American wives but most nights they were out on their own and I would not have guessed they were married. lol

I was surprised about those dynamics and I remember seeing the opposite (local woman with male tourist) once or maybe twice and commenting about this and the comments I got were very negative. Essentially, these guys said the girl was a prostitute (although I'm not convinced she actually was but that she was probably engaged in the same kind of behavior the guys were) and explained the usual double standard that it would be viewed as absolutely inappropriate and shameful for women to be out like they were. That's when I noticed that clubs were always packed with tourists and local men - never ever any local women.

I have no idea how it was worked out, if, how or how much money was exchanged although I'm sure the girls paid for their drinks/food and such and the guys didn't appear to actually work anywhere.

Anyway, just rambling but I remember being so surprised to hear guys genuinely convinced that all women who traveled there were looking for a hookup and that was their main goal. The idea that women might not be after this was ridiculous to them. I suppose that like the women in the movie, it was true that a lot of women went there with this in mind but I have to say that even though we did have an amazing vacation, it was for many reasons other than hooking up and that we found this part a little overwhelming, a bit much to deal with. I've always wanted to go back one day but just like if I ever go to Bali, I think I might only go with at least one male, whether it's a friend or a spouse, whatever..but I don't think I'd get into those shark waters just so I can act as bait with only one other female. Oh well. Not for me, I guess. But I do still find it interesting to see those girls in the movie.
