I just saw online that Chrysler might pull out of Canada if they don't get the wage concessions by CAW. Apparently the cost per hour for one of their workers is $76 which includes cost of benefits, pension, etc.

Toyota has their employee costs at $57 per hour.

Huh.

Brother in law works at one of the GM plants.
For the last 18 years I believe
Makes a huge amount of money, has a home paid off, 5 vehicles and a boat.
Doing really well.

The guy had zero education and zero work experience when he was hired.
His dad worked there, that's how he was hired. It seems the majority of their hiring is based on hiring relatives. Obviously not the best way to get the best workers.

Whenever I see this guy, he complains more about work, then anyone I know.
Usually about his wage, or silly things, like cpp is too much.
Over his 18 years there, he has on several occasions been giving the chance, for opportunities, like getting a trade ticket. Or even a chance to work on an engineering degree that they would pay for, and let him keep his job around his school schedule.

He was never interested....."why would I become an engineer...they only make like $10,000 more.......and with OT I make way more than the engineers...."

His only options left, hopefully get to stay on at GM for a lower wage, if somehow the company can manage to stay going. Or get another factory job, for a much lower wage. And likely have to sell his home and move, as he won't be finding much factory work in his area.

But nope....he wants and actually expects a 10% raise this year

let them go , if the unions demand is too high then they out priced themselves in a free competitive market. that is free enterprise , so fuk em !!!
See, the thing is that unions are intended to provide the best possible deal for their members, but what so many union bosses and union negotiators fail to understand is that sometimes the best deal for the members is to take pay cuts in order to avoid the shutting down of an unprofitable factory/shop/whatever. Ask most union members what they'd prefer: to take a pay cut, or to be out of a job in an economy where there are few jobs to be found. Most union bosses and negotiators don't see it that way, though, because they always assume that threats to close locations are bluffs.

The really sad thing is that unions have played such an important role in establishing so many employee rights that we take for granted today, and that in some industries they are still vitally important in protecting the employees, and yet so many unions have allowed themselves to become dinosaurs.

Good riddence. I hope they take the junk they build, their lousy customer service, and their shitty attitude with them.

Unions price themselves out of their jobs and I have no sympathy for them at all $76 to screw a tire rim to a car or install a window is just stupid in the first place.
