Edmonton Chinese restaurant closed by health inspectors

EDMONTON — Health inspectors have closed a south-side Chinese restaurant after they found knives and storage containers encrusted with food, raw meat being stored with ready-to-eat vegetables, dirty wiping rags and mould and dirt in the ice machine.

Wonderful Garden Restaurant at 9010 75th St. will remain closed until the owners have fixed the long list of problems that were putting the public’s health at risk.

Nyall Hislop, senior adviser with environmental public health services, said his department will also be charging the restaurant owners for their disregard for safety. Previous cleanup orders had been issued in September 2008 and November 2007, and although some of the issues were initially resolved, conditions deteriorated since then.

“I know they weren’t very happy with being closed,” Hislop said.

According to the closure order, inspectors found:

- mice droppings and insect activity.

- a dishwasher that wasn’t working properly, and no detectable sanitizer being used in the final rinse.

- an ice machine with dirt and mould buildup.

- raw food stored near ready-to-eat food.

- dirty, food-encrusted knives.

- a food strainer that had been repaired with string, exposing loose metal.

- dirty rags used to clean surfaces.

- cut meat and cooked rice found at room temperature.

Hislop said if the owners clean up the mess and successfully pass another inspection, they can reopen the restaurant even before the charges head to court.

“We’re keeping an eye on them,” he said. “The ball is in their court now.”

A phone call to the restaurant was not answered.

Any health inspector will tell you that almost EVERY restaurant in any city will fail inspections at some point during their lifetime. You are hard pressed to find ANY restaurant that has not or will not ever fail an inspection. The above is extreme but not as uncommon as you may think.

Not true. There's a difference between failing an inspection because of unsanitary conditions that pose a direct threat to public health and requiring that some issues be attended to such as a lock on a freezer door that does not close securely.

You are correct that the above example is an extreme example but it is all too common in chinese restaurants and very rare in other restaurants. You simply have to look at the health inspectors reports that are posted online to see that chinese restaurants have more violations than others.
