The favourite moans of Canucks fans are, "the refs/league are against us" or "We never get the calls."

Well, holy shit has that gone up in flames this season. In virtually every game the calls sees to go the Canucks' way.

Including tonight's, "I really meant to blow the whistle, even though I indicated a goal" idiocy from the ref.

This also brings up another nit pick with the league - "video reviews and coach's challenges." There are just too many, they take too long and the human element of a linesman making a call is taken away. If a missed call is obvious and gets over-turned that's one thing, but a micro-second or micro-centimeter play getting a goal waived off just seems too surgical and reliant on technology.

Agree 100%. They change the rules to speed up the game, reviews are going to make them longer unless they nip in the bud.

That should have been a goal simply because there was no whistle blown. So now a goal can be disallowed because
the ref had "intent" to blow the whistle to kill the play???? Utter bullshit!

Simple to understand, the ref blows the whistle the play is dead. No whistle. play continues.

It really doesn't matter what the fans like to complain about or league preferences. In the long run the calls even out and it's very difficult to pinpoint reffing as the cause for a team's woes over the course of an entire season. It can have large short term impact (see Hull's foot! lol) but when we're talking about missed penalties and/or offsides and such, we can forget about it.

The "intent to blow" has always been around, and it makes perfect sense to make up for the slow speed at which the ref is able to blow the whistle (yes, hockey is a fast game). People can't be results-oriented just because a misapplication of it was used in this case. The only shame here is that ref pointed into the net to indicate goal rather than to wave it off immediately as a result of the intent to blow the whistle (unless it was the intent of the other ref, I don't know). To be honest though, it would have been a lot easier for them to call that a goal because they'd already decided as such rather than to admit they were going to blow the whistle... unless you're a conspiracy theorist.

I think reviewing off-sides calls is complete BS. Let the linesmen make the calls as they see it- they are usually bang on. Overturning a call after 5+ minutes of deliberation to confirm a millimetre is nonsense. Let them play!
2 refs, 2 linesmen and all the calls that get missed- but reviewing a skate blade off the ice is priority?
I agree with the "intent to blow the whistle"- just not in this case the way it all unfolded. Ref indicated a goal with his numerous hand gestures.
He should have waved it off immediately, skated out to centre ice and made the call- no review with T.O./NY required.
Laviolette was pissed- and rightfully so. Can you imagine 'Nuck fans if the tables were turned? Would have been a shit-show.

It has happened several times before and is a perfectly legitimate call, however, I don't think any ref has ever emphatically called it a goal and then said he was intending on blowing the whistle.

The calls that are going in the Canucks' favour are designed by the NHL to keep them in the playoff hunt so they can either just miss the playoffs and get a higher draft pick or just squeak into the playoffs only to get eliminated in the first round and hand their long suffering fans another shot below the belt. Plus the added bonus to the NHL (who obviously hate the Canucks) is that the team management will think it has a shot and won't be able to trade their expiring assets like Burrows and Miller for picks and they will walk at the end of the year with zero compensation for the Canucks.

It's brilliant!

Leaf fans are delusional. They're a rich team, they don't win & the fans seem unwilling to accept this is the reality. The Oilers are different. It's a much smaller town that's more isolated and way less worldly. The fans show up, support young kids who, when they get good, flee for greener pastures. Edmonton fans are real hockey fans. A gorgeous young SP, with a graduate degree and an ability to critique the Canucks' woeful draft record ? Now that's a dangerous combination.

Thank god she lives in Victoria or I'd probably be out of money fast ( although I've saved a bundle by not renewing season tickets).

Here's hoping that Peyton starts offering "Hockey Nights in Vancouver" complete with game time ice-level analysis and post-game festivities ( but no hot stove action ).

Might just make going to games bearable again.

It doesn't take much arm twisting to convince me to watch or go to games. I'm a masochistic Canucks fan through and through. Luckily for you (maybe unlucky for the wallet) I'll be in Vancouver February 9-11.
