I am trying to take advantage of the vast experience out there on this site.

Can I just go down to a city like Seattle and show up at a hotel in the hopes that they will have a room, without booking a head of time.
Is this more expensive.

Should I have a few hotels in mind before doing this as a back up.

It will be downtown Seattle. I will be arriving fairly late at night.

Always Make a Reservation

Never ever show up without a reservation. Even if they have rooms - you will get the more expensive price. Same type of rule as with airlines. The closer they are to capacity - the more expensive the rate. Seattle has a lot of hotels but there are cheaper alternatives if you do not need to be downtown. Renton is closer to the Airport, Lynnwood (you can go to a site like rooms at par) and Bellevue (Hyatt and the Westin have good deals there).

The Kimpton Hotel Chain has a lot of nice boutique hotels there (around $130 to $150 per night). Alexis Hotel and Hotel Monaco.

Expensive Chain ones ($200 per night and over) would be the Westin, Fairmont Olympic, W Seattle.
