Can someone on perb recommend a good body lotion for dry skin that doesn't stink (of lotion or perfumes etc...)?

This time of year my skin gets dry and I need to find a good body lotion to use after a shower or when I have a bath and shave my balls and chest!

I find a lot of the lotions stink and then that smell gets into your clothes...

Please no girlie stuff that is $35 for a tiny bottle either, that lasts 1 or 2 weeks.

Thanks,

ITB

What I've switched to is organic virgin coconut oil. It works as good after shaving as any product I have bought.
But alas, it does have a bit of a coconut smell.

I use a lot of Neutrogena products and they are usually on sale at London Drugs. I get everything from shave cream, aftershave, liquid shower soap, moisturizer and the list goes on.

For "the boys" try Fresh Balls which is a liquid but turns into a powder when applied. It is a great product.

WARNING: If you are at all yeast sensitive or know you have Candidiasis, AVOID USING ORGANIC VIRGIN COCONUT OIL on your body!!! I discovered this the hard way earlier this year after gettting a wonderful massage with the very thing herein described....

But on the other hand, coconut oil was been shown to be an effective antibiotic, and anti-fungal.

I would say skip all the big brands Curel, Vaseline, Aveeno, Nivea and DEFINITELY skip baby oil (GAH!) -- The dirty dozen here

I started checking the labels more and I'm a little freaked out by all this stuff. As I finish the products I have, I'm trying to find non toxic, non chemical alternatives that also don't have any 'fragrance' added and it isn't as easy as it should be. You have a far better chance of finding it at Whole foods/Choices than at stores like Safeway or London drugs/Shopper's drugmart. (You can always buy it online - well.ca has a good natural/organic selection for body products and food and shipping is free for orders more than $25.)

FYI You guys can check the ratings on thousands of products on this really useful website: The Environmental working group's Skin Deep

You can find TONS of info on Adria Vasil's (the lady in the video, author of the 'Ecoholic' books) website: http://www.ecoholic.ca/

Some guys could probably survive on a bar of Irish Spring alone. In truth the average man uses six personal care products a day (think shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, shaving cream, deodorant, aftershave), which ads up to a whopping 80 chems every morning. That number spikes for the growing posse of styly metrosexuals, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy disciples and grooming-conscious gents using men’s facial scrubs, anti-aging creams and beyond. That’s the topic of this week’s Ecoholic column in NOW Magazine, triggered by a new report from Environmental Defence entitled The Manscape: The Dirt On Toxic Ingredients in Men’s Bodycare Products. I get into the nitty gritty around carcinogen and hormone disruptor-laced brands but didn’t get a chance to dig into more natural alternatives. Thought I’d share a few with you right here, right now.

Skip the shaving cream altogether and grab yourself a bottle of oil from your kitchen. Be it olive, grapeseed, safflower, sunflower, coconut, just rub a few drops on your damp face after showering and shave away. Super cheap and totally edible. (Coconut oil, by the way, is solid below 24 degrees so massage a dab in your palm to melt it). Still want shaving cream? Try Weleda’s.

Face feeling a little dry come winter? Dab a drop or two of any quality oil listed above on your face (and/or body) after your shower. My man’s actually hijacked my sample of Pure + Simple’s Sensitive Pitta Face Oil with anti-inflammatory neem oil (it’s also my pal Scott’s fave). Again, since you only use a drop at a time, these are surprisingly economical, and they’ll make your skin irresistibly touchable rather than a flakey mess.

Are you a Head and Shoulders man? Skip the chem-laced soup (which also happens to be toxic to aquatic life) and bypass shampoos with scalp-irritating sulfates. Lather up with a natural, herb-rich shampoo like Botanical Therapeutic shampoo or Ferlow Botanicals Neem Shampoo. Actually, you can buy any natural shampoo like, say, Green Beaver’s and add a few drops of neem oil (from the health store) to a to your morning lather. For tougher cases, put 1 teaspoon straight neem oil combined with a teaspoon of olive oil on your scalp and let sit before washing. Rinsing hair with 1 part apple cider vinegar 1 part warm water helps too.

Finally, you should check out The Manscape: The Dirt on Toxic Ingredients in Men’s Body Care Products and 'The less toxic guide':

Lotions, Creams and Moisturizers

Lotions are basically a mixture of water and oils, with an emulsifier added to keep the product from separating. A variety of other chemicals are added to this mixture as moisturizing agents, thickeners and preservatives.

Mineral oil and petrolatum, both petroleum products, are widely used as oils in lotions to keep the skin moist and smooth by locking moisture in. Both mineral oil and petrolatum can be contaminated with potentially carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Propylene glycol and lanolin are also used for the same purpose. Propylene glycol is a recognized neurotoxin and is known to cause contact dermatitis at very low concentrations. Lanolin is an animal product that can be contaminated with pesticides. It may also cause allergies. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) compounds, such as ceteareth, are often used in lotions to create a smooth liquid film on the body. PEG compounds can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen. Polysorbate 60 and 80 are also used in lotions, and they may also be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane. TEA, a skin irritant and immune system toxicant, is also a common ingredient in lotions.

Preservatives like DMDM hydantoin, which is used in many moisturizers, and quaternium-15 can release carcinogenic formaldehyde. Estrogen-mimicking parabens, usually methylparaben and propylparaben, are also common preservatives in lotions and moisturizers. Retinyl palmitate, which is supposed to reduce wrinkles, is an ingredient in many facial creams and anti-aging products. Retinyl palmitate can produce free radicals and damage skin DNA. It can increase the risk of skin cancer when skin is exposed to UV light. Fragrance is added to most lotions, creams and moisturizers. Fragrance contains many toxic ingredients including asthma triggers and hormone disrupting phthalates. Fragrance ingredients such as limonene, lilial and geraniol may also be added both as fragrance and to mask chemical smells. These ingredients are known skin irritants.

Hand lotions are often just thicker versions of facial moisturizers. They work mainly by covering dry skin with oil, which can clog pores. Plant-based lotions like shea butter or cocoa butter can nourish the skin and provide long-term benefits.

The average man uses six personal care products a day, which adds up to an average of 80 chemical substances, the vast majority of which have not been tested for safety.

Approximately 85 per cent of chemicals found in Canadian products have no safety data. The minimal testing standards, like GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) certification, only look at short-term effects. There is very limited research on the long-term or synergistic effects, in other words, the mix of chemicals. Presently there’s no way to know the cocktail effect of those ingredients.

I've had dry skin for years and at best can just keep it at bay. Tired all the stuff off the shelf. Recently got some lotion with ammonium lactate in it. Can be found on the shelf as we'll. Found it works well.

I've been using non-scented Curel for years, leaves your skin feeling silky soft. ;)
Same as Sarah, I use the unscented Curel but I discoverred another product at Costco that works great too. Eucerin Calming Creme. It is fragrant free and I like the feel of it..

How About Dry Feet...?

During foot massage, I encounter a lot of dry feet, which I like to pamper and spoil, even if it's just for this one moment in time (ie. I know the routine won't likely be followed in the future). I know the fellas don't typically give as much attention to their feet as the ladies do.

I found a product at Costco which I recommend for nighttime. Have a shower or bath (softens the skin) and then apply Dermal Therapy (contains beeswax) before putting on clean socks. Sleep in socks and, in the morning, have a shower as normal. Repeat daily for at least 5 nights, and you should see some great results.

Eucerin is a very good product . It's non scented and not too thick coming out of the bottle . It soaks in and acts like a barrier cream it really helps me with the dry itchy legs I get during the winter . I love how it soaks in and if you wear socks to bed after putting this on your feet you might be very happy in the morning .

Coconut oil is a very useful product because you can eat it, cook with it , and can either use it as a moisturizer for hair and body or mix it with other products like sugar or salt and make a scrub .
It is sometimes non scented but when I'm lucky I get the one that comes with the natural coconut scent and flavour it's delicious nutritious and great for hair and scalp treatments and taking off eye makeup

For very very dry skin I would recommend using eucerin and organic castor oil together , very healing and it works . I sometimes use this on my clients for massage on hands and feet . No complaints yet .

Happy holidays

You could probably use muck right out of the oilsands to massage your clients and they wouldn't complain.:D

The problem with a lot of products is that your skin can become dependent on them. When you stop using them, things get worse than before.

Cereve is a good and inexpensive brand that restores your skins natural PH and provides a protective barrier. It is full of cerimides which are what we lose as our skin ages. The contents of cereve are very close to department store brands which charge 4 times more, for 1/16 of the product.

It's not a sexy product (no sensual scent...actually no scent at all), but it is an effective one, and even the most chapped skin will have major relief in 2-3 days.
