Blu Ray Help Please?

7-8 years ago I bought a 3 disc CD/DVD player/double tape deck/radio/home theatre system from Sony. The CD/DVD player no longer plays CD's or DVD's, and a repair shop says it would probably cost more to repair than to just buy a new one. What I'd like to get is something similar, a home theatre setup that plays CD's, DVD's and Blu-Ray with a radio too (Tape deck would be nice, but I don't think they even make them anymore). I've checked out Future Shop, Best Buy and Sunridge Mall Sony Store but haven't seen any thing that grabs my fancy yet.

Any of the more technologically advanced here have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

Thing I have learned about the Blu Ray is there are updates coming out fairly frequently. I am guessing I have had 3 so far this year. I have a Sony with WiFi and it will update itself via WiFi. Otherwise, I am assuming you would have to download from the manufacturers site and install it via a flash drive etc. The clerk at Blockbuster recently asked me if I update my machine etc. He mentioned some of the newer BR disks won't work on some machines because people have not been updating the software in the player.

I would get separate components rather than a one box solution precisely for the reason you are shopping for a new one now. Blu Ray will play DVD's too. Do you really want a tape player? CD and iPod are the way to go or get an XM radio for your home.

I guess he has old tapes.

For under $100, there are machines that will turn tapes into MP3's. He might want to get one of those before the tapes become unreadable.

You're pretty much looking at getting the Blu-ray (which also plays DVDs and up-converts them to 1080p) as a separate unit and an Audio Video Receiver. Some Blu-ray machines will play CDs as well or decent 2nd hand CD players are cheap these days.

If you want, just buy a BR player home theatre in a box. Some sound pretty good for the price you pay. Most of them have an auxillary input if you could purchase a tape deck separately. Just do some research on reviews of the products before you buy 'em. My old one has an iPod so do as JNewton said and convert the tapes before it's too late.
