The fact there is a language barrier is kind of surprising. I've been to Finland, and pretty much every Finn under 50 (and many over) was completely fluent in English. Some people originally from rural areas were a little bit rusty and not confident in their abilities, but even they were easy to understand. The country hasnt been speaking English as a second language as long as Norway or Sweden, but it's nothing like Russia or Ukraine where even most 20-somethings don't speak English. It might be one of those cases where she doesn't want to talk because she doesn't believe her English is good, when in actuality it's fine. I encountered that a lot.
