It seems that Alberta currently has a problem with syphilis. The public health agency of Canada has estimated that eight of every 100,000 Albertans have syphilis, twice the national average.

In 2009 they had 279 new cases of infectious syphilis for the province; this included a number of cases in newborn babies that resulted in some infant deaths. They have also reported some cases of neuro-syphilis (spread to the brain) in adults which has resulted in permanent vision loss.

The most common symptoms for syphilis are a painless sore and rashes. What we have been seeing is that most people are not getting symptoms from syphilis so the only way to find out is from a blood test.

Syphilis is completely curable with antibiotics. The only problem is that any damage that is done before you take the antibiotics may be permanent.

In response to the syphilis outbreak in Alberta the government has launched a “dating” website to give the public more information.
