Ferry passengers get stylish new market

The folksy outdoor market @B.C. Ferries' Tsawwassen terminal will soon go the way of the much-loved "Sunshine Breakfast".
Instead of tables of hand-made knick-knacks, passengers will be treated to a $5million, 16K square-foot, yuppie-style facility run by Lonsdale Quay Market Corp.
"Our proposal is based on the concept of Lonsdale Quay Market & Granville Island," Bryan Tunke, general manager of the North Vancouver market, said yesterday.
He said he has met w/the terminal's market vendors & will meet them again in the next few weeks once the mix of retail stores is decided.
"The rents will be similar to what they are paying now," he said.
The new, 1story, glass & wood building will be about 1/2 the size of Lonsdale Quay & double the size of Tsawwassen's existing Galley West & marketplace.
An artist's impression of the interior, designed by Kay, Matthews & Associates - the company that designed the inside of Urban Fare in Vancouver - includes salmon that "swim" along wavy tracks in the roof of the building.
B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall said Galley West will be demolished after Labour Day & construction will begin soon after.
The new market is scheduled to open in time for the 2005 summer season.
It will feature a wide range of fresh fruit & vegetables, specialty coffees, baked goods, deli products, clothing, local crafts & gifts.
The exterior will be designed by Stantec, the principal architects of the international terminal @Vancouver International Airport.
The long-running "Sunshine Breakfast" - consisting of ice cream-scooped scambled eggs covered in gooey, yellow, hollandaise sauce plus ham & toast - was tossed overboard by B.C. Ferries last year in a bid to modernize its menu.
It was replaced by the "All Aboard Breakfast" consisting of "2 eggs, a double serving of breakfast meat, hashbrowns, toast & preserves," quickly nicknamed the "the heart-attack special" by kitchen crews.
