It's not yet December but I figure it's as good as anytime to start a year end review thread. I mean I already see Christmas decorations up at Costco.
The landscape of the Vancouver scene had definitely changed in the last year.
The career providers that have been the core of the Vancouver scene are still doing their best to keep our city the envy of hobbyists around the world. There were quite a few notable retirements this year: Josie Roxx, Alex Adare, Josie Winter, Abigail Fine, Lavina, Serina, Playful Alex, and Talisha Cruze, to name a few. Those of you who were hobbying two years ago recognize a few of those names and their significance as the near complete rooster of the "Weebly girls". The best to all retired ladies and all their future endeavors, I don't think they'll know how much happiness and comfort they were a source of. There were a couple of new names and personalities that sprung up this year, most notable being Lucy Lake and her seemingly boundless sex drive.
Vancouver as a whole welcomed a lot more visiting providers as well, especially towards the end of the year. Many coming from the Island, Toronto, and Quebec. I'm not sure if this was simply because of economic reasons, or if there were rumours about BC's market, or if it was caused by a strange side effect of Bill C-36. Unfortunately, Vancouver is a tough city to crack and the momentum required for a successful tour requires patience, reputation, and planning that many were not able to do. A Backpage ad run for a couple of days isn't enough in this town.
As a whole, even before Bill C-36 I think the market in Vancouver was tightening its purse strings. Of course, there will always be a population that will have the disposal income to indulge in this hobby, but I think the hobbying population as a whole has declined this year. If you add in Bill C-36 you will see a declining number of people entering the hobby, while the number exiting stays constant for the foreseeable future. Canada vs Bedford took about 5 years from initial hearing to its final decision. Even though I know that Bill C-36 will eventually be struck down, even if expedited, the process can easily be 3-5 years in the making.
There has also been changes to how people can research in this hobby. Boards have moved their hosting to friendly countries. Directories removed. Retired board are rumoured to be coming back. Advertising has been limited to what they can say. Verification services on both sides of the fence have had their features changed or been completely removed. And is it me or was it possible to look at reviews older than a month on Perb before?
Predictions for the future? The first successful prosecution of a John under the new laws? A greater divide in price points? Fudge sundaes being offered as standard service? Threads on dating SP's, and services that are included in GFE finally becoming sticky?
