    Stanley by Tim Jeal. If you like historical biographies, it's hard to beat this one. It's the story of how a damaged Victorian pauper (who fought on both sides of the Civil War) explored Africa and famously 'discovered' Livingstone.

    All due respect to the veterans, but racist attitudes were quite prevalent in Canada in the 1940s. I mean the Klan was pretty big in Saskatchewan in the interwar period. Those people didn't just disappear once WWII started. We just don't talk about it.
