Recently I had a sp mention she knows someone that can trace my ip adress and she has enough information on me now? To track me ??I have never met her or was being rude or anything ? Is this the first steps of trying to blackmail me to send money?
also i was in a different country and using hotel wifi when she started messaging me .
thoughts?

Look, IP addresses are kinda a useless info these days. Between IPV4 exhaustion and carrier based NAT IP addresses aren't unique anymore. Just block and ignore.
Really ok thanks i know nothing about any of this thanks!

Your IP address is shared with everyone in the hotel, because there aren't enough IP addresses for every device on the internet. (IPv4 was invented before people imagined fridges would need to be on the internet). And then again at the carrier level so your IP address is changed from Telus to Rogers too, let alone country to country. Having your IP address is pretty much useless on the modern internet. (I mean they can DOS you with IP and port and IPv6 is different but it isn't widely adopted yet especially in Canada ). They can't find you unless they have access to the address change tables on the networking equipment across the entire process.

On a burner?....you know what a burner is, right?... to BURN it on a whim.

I'm not an IT guy, so I don't know how IPs work. but even so, a layman can understand that as long as your name isn't attached to anything on that phone you can toss it away without worrying about anyone 'tracking you'.

If you're really that paranoid, buy the burner phone and any 'pay-as-you-go' minute cards with cash, never credit or debit. IP of the phone or serial numbers of the minute-cards could be linked to the receipts stored in the store's computer. If "they" really wanted to get to you because you're an 'FBI top 10 suspect' that's how they could track you. But you're a poon-mongerer, not a terrorist. If it makes you feel better. Wear a hoodie and a COVID mask in the store, pay with cash, and hope the store doesn't use 4k CCTVs.

As for the hotel wifi, they don't use individual wifi routers in every room (maybe in 5-star VIP suites, I don't know). It's usually one per floor, or every few floors, depending on how strong the router is. Basically it'll be way too vague on who is using that router, anyone could use them with a password.

besides that, if you really feel the heat for being scared by a tough talking scammer, ditch your phone....done...

If you use Rogers, she might be able to obtain info on you if she has friends who work there.

Assuming your burner is capable of it (i.e. is a smartphone and not an old school flip phone or "dumb phone") just get a vpn service on your burner smart phone. Pretty much all the major VPN providers can run on iOS and Android.

Friend, or no friend, a warrant would be required. If the "Friend" is found to have released that info, being fired would be the least of their worries. Not going to happen.
Also, the probability that even if they had your IP Address, it would be a non-routable IP address and useless for tracking purposes. Even if tracking were possible it would require some really advanced tracking systems and equipment.
I would tell her to go pound sand!

If.

I've worked at Rogers, and there was little they were doing to monitor what people could look up. It was a free for all. The only time anyone would get caught is if someone used a customer's credit card info and through an investigation by the bank it was traced back to him (happened at least once), but otherwise you could punch in a phone number into the tool we'd use and find address, first and last name, SIN (if provided to start account)...etc

This was YEARS ago though. Not sure it's that easy anymore, but I'd be cautious with using Rogers. Agents from other telecoms leave a digital fingerprint each time they look up a customer's info, and will be asked why they looked up certain accounts without an inbound phone call from that account holder...etc

Had to read that one a few times ... so your cell number, the one you use for your pooning, is on your facebook page, open, unhidden, viewable by anyone, and your FP profile is public? And the SP searched for your cell number? on your FB, then figured out who your SO is to key up a message to your partner.
Just trying to understand this ...

Correct, i use my everyday phone number for pooning, i was unaware that my facebook was connected via my phone number. I have since changed this, but if u punch a phone number into the search bar the number will show a profile attached, my profile is semi private not public, but yes they searched from there for my partner and messaged her. I just pass on the info so others can be aware of these things

Meaningless, and prove which agent did what with the info they accessed.
I am in IT and also have friends at Rogers, Bell, Telus.... I can guarantee you that ANY data accessed can, and is, tracked. It is relatively easy to monitor with todays tools. Like you said you worked there years ago. Technology changes hourly, so "years ago" was a different world.

I get it, but even today. If an SP finds your personal info and texts it to you saying, "Hey I have this info on you, and know how to expose you." Would your first thoughts be that an agent from your Telecom provider is a buddy who sent her your info? Most people wouldn't go there and many would be too spooked for approaching a prostitute to get law enforcement involved. So an agent looking up your info would not go anywhere.

My first thought would be "Fuck You." followed closely by "Bullshit!"
The majority of the blackmail threads I have read here over the years have no basis in fact. Just phishing! Not to say there are not legit instances, but the majority are used as scare tactics for financial gain!
