Sorry I was thinking about Furlong.
For Furlong, it took him multiple shots (Afghanistan). For the actual title holder (unknown), yes it was 1 shot (in Iraq). But on first try at that range it would involve alot of luck. If you read the third article, the same sniper then shot at a group of people (3 shots and missed 3 times). These people ducked.
The sniping in Afghanistan happened across mountain tops and valleys, so all sniping was at range. The local would just stand, if a shot came close, knowing it was impractical for the sniper to hit them at those ranges. Air currents across the valleys also made sniping difficult in Afghanistan. So if this guy ducked, he wouldn't of been killed.
