So I'm looking to get a pickup truck and need some advice. I have time to consider so it's not gonna be an impulse purchase. If you own a truck and have some advice on which one I should get please share some.

What I'm looking for:
I work as an electrician on construction sites so it's not just gonna be a daily driver, it will get some beating as well.
I'm a short guy (5'7) so just mid-size pickups like Tacoma, Ranger, Ridgeline, Frontier, etc.
A crew-cab so I can drive other people
Should it be an open bed or should I get a canopy as well?

Thanks

I like my Colorado. I use a roll up tonneau cover because I like to load it higher than a canopy would allow. The Ranger seems nice too. I think Tacomas are more of a lifestyle truck than a work truck.

Owned GM,Dodge and Ford. Bought a Frontier 6 years ago and I'll never go back to North American trucks again. Hands down the best truck I've ever owned, lots of power, consumes a lot of gas if you've got a lead foot. Easy to work on,only problem I had with it was a recall issue with the gas tank which was covered. I've put over 200,000 km on her and only had to do regular maintenance on her.

I have had quite a few, over the years. My trucks are used, to death, beat to crap and eventually retired, or scrapped. I have a 94 Chevy, Silverado, however that refuses to die. It is old and ugly with scars galore (much like me), at this point it has multiple internal issues and yet, even now, anytime I decide to use it, it starts at first turn of key, runs amazingly well, has never had a major issue, or left me stranded. Has way over. 350,000 kilometers of really, hard, even brutal use and much neglect and just won't die.

I took my N in a 08 F350 superduty diesel and I’m 4’11” so don’t let the size of a truck stop you from getting a truck because of its size. I aced the test first try including parallel parking. Occasionally size does matter lol.

Loved the ford, great on milage for the size and I always got lots of looks driving it. The hubby didn’t like being in the passengers seat when I was driving, thought people must be thinking he had a suspended licence for that to happen 😛

Ford was a great truck, few problems and sold for half what bought it for after driving for almost 10 years with 250k on it. Had a cover on the back that folded up which was handy. No complaints. I miss it occasionally but am enjoying my Jeep 😊🤗

I think if you are using it for work, you will want to keep your stuff save and covered when it’s raining out?

Im a Ford guy.
Just my two cents but don’t discount the f150s because of your height. They seem big on the outside but it feels pretty comfy in the drivers seat, and I’m under 6ft also. The new rangers are a real head turner for me tho!
And f u haven’t already, I’d say check out the dealer brochures that you can find online. ..for fords at least, but likely for every other vehicle also. A wealth of info there.

I’m partial to the tri fold tonneau. But with our weather a canopy may be more practical with what you need to haul for the job sites.

And a vehicle is generally a major purchase for most people, so nothing beats a test drive and getting a “feel” in the drivers seat for what may be your new truck.

I had a Tacoma for work and leisure for 15 years and was glad I did. Unless you need the extra bed space for things like plywood or drywall the smaller size truck works very well. Easier on gas but still versatile. And absolutely get a cap/canopy. It gives you a dry, lockable space and more hight for most things without having to tie down or tarp. I packed that thing will all sorts of stuff. For the times when I did need an open bed I rigged up some hooks in my garage to lift the cap off. It took about 15 minutes to take off but TBH I think I needed to do it about 3 times in the years I had the Taco.

In 09, I got a 2002 Tacoma V6 4x4 small crew cab. The crew cab really was just a shelf, my dog loved it! Had a cap and as far as I was concerned that was essential. Also had a rack on top of the cap so I could haul oversized things up there and it towed my 18ft power boat without a problem. The deal was from a dealer I knew who owed me one so it was one of those can't lose things. This was very much a truck. Stiff ride, solid, not much in the luxury dept but one heck of what it was supposed to be. But, gas mileage was not great as in pretty shitty so I rationalized the low cost vs gas cost over the 5 years I had it. I'd always been a GM / Chevy guy but if I was in the market for a new truck, no question I would be looking at Toyota.

Had 3 of ‘em
They only get better and better -
Trouble right now is trying to find one - due to the global semiconductor shortage they are in short supply right now. Anything that comes in sells quickly. Factory order one of you can wait 3-6 months ?

Definitely a good investment for the canopy cause I work around electricians and their trucks usually have one. Even though I don't have a pickup myself, I've used and been able to heavily rely on GMC Sierras of all trucks.

If you are using it as a work vehicle, I'd follow your trade and forego a pick up for a van - more secure, easier to organize and way more comfortable than crawling around under a canopy. Most people driving pickups in the city really don't need them.

A van would have a lot more room but I can only afford 1 vehicle so it would have to be both for work and leisure

Toyota's are decent trucks, kinda small inside and if your buying an older one have the frame checked out for Rust first
Rangers have always been a good truck rear seat space is a little tight but can store gear etc maybe not alot of transporting people though.
I really like the New Rangers and the new Colorado's
full size F150's 250 350 usually need alot of front suspension work, good hauling capability good for passengers
full size GM the new ones are nice older w duramax still a decent truck suspension steering always needs repair due to independant
If i was to go buy one new today it would be the Colorado w the 3.8 duramax Z71
Vans are great for cargo...you could also get an older GM and have dual purpose cargo/Boogie van
