I agree, but one point that always plagues my mind is the fact that men are naturally wired to be a lot hornier and have less impulse control than women...so its probably best to stay single or unmarried and use the services of SP's or just make it clear that sexual relationships stay that way...& use protection - lots of it. Not the fault of men thats just the way we evolved (or created w/e).

The problem is exacerbated by the way fathers are portrayed in countless films and TV shows as being utterly inept and untrustworthy. Off the top of my head, I can cite Men Behaving Badly, Last Of The Summer Wine, The Simpsons, Everybody Loves Raymond and Friends as examples, plus Three Men And A Baby — the highest-grossing box office hit of 1987.

I have a friend whose wife had an affair and then insisted he leave the house. He stayed and slept on the couch for about 6 months until she left and moved in with her boyfriend. They have a son and a daughter. The daughter lives with her mom and spends time with her dad as much as she can. Their son lives with his father and is disabled; his mother has very little to do with him. This guy is working himself into the ground caring for his son and making sure he will be taken care of financially when he is gone. The mother is required to pay around $500 (yes five HUNDRED) per month for child support for her son, but it rarely happens.
I know another guy who has spent the last two years and almost 100K (so far) in a divorce. His wife decided she wanted to "move on". She has been stalling and delaying things as much as possible to drive up his legal bills in hopes he will just give up and walk away from a house and business.
Personally I went through a divorce as well, I eventually had to leave for my own safety. Fortunately we didn't have kids or it would have been a nightmare. When someone decides they don't want to be with you, then that is their decision, but they don't have to ruin your life and finances in the process.
I also know of some guys who have been just as guilty of the same tactics, so it isn't just the women, however I feel that the courts are skewed to favour women. I don't have hordes of ladies pursuing me by any stretch of the imagination, but when someone does show an interest in me I'm usually suspicious. It sucks that my reaction to someone liking me causes me to withdraw, but better safe than sorry.

Also, if you made babies, you have to support them.

And, if your wife suffered an economic disadvantage by staying home and housewifing, you might have to support her.

These are common-sense rules. But men who see their assets and income as "theirs" often have a tough time seeing that.

That is the theory, but it often does not happen that because when a relationship breaks down, there is bitterness and both sides are out to screw each other, and not in a good way.

Not only do they split all assets aquired during their marriage, they are both responsible for the debt aquired during the marriage. Pensions on both sides are devided for the years that the couple were together. The greater income earner pays child support. It doesn't seem like too many relationships that are single income anymore, usually both people work.

That's so funny and it applies to a friend of mine who got the 'trophy' wife for his second kick at the can.

Unfortunately, he didn't listen to me because love is blind and I was looking out for his best interests. No pre nup!

She recently petitioned the court to try to get some assets that were his prior to the marriage. In a nutshell she was told to live within her means and not try to get more than her entitlement.

I always wanted to get married... but things didn't work out. I know in my hear that if I'd gotten married - I'd probably have gotten divorced.

I've seen a lot of colleagues I work with go through awful, soul-destroying divorces.

Aren't common law spouses the same as married couples when it comes to splitting up? Aren't couples automatically common law after a year? two? of living together? Isn't child support totally unrelated to marital status?

Manitoba law is three years if no children and one year if a child is born. I believe it can be less if the couple registers themselves as common law.
