Part of the problem with racism, is people can't even agree what is racist and what isn't. You can go around in circles arguing this stuff to death.

Ask older African American people how they feel about how the N word is being tossed around by younger African Americans. Making it hip in songs and using it as a punchline. The problem being is, the younger ones will give you their reasoning (granted they weren't there and have no real idea) and have zero respect for the wishes of their older generation (wishes being, don't use the word).

I have always cringed hearing that word because of the hate and malice it was intended. To hear it being celebrated by people of their own race saddens me but it isn't going to change IMO.
Actually, today's use of the word "racism" and what's deemed to be derogatory racially based terms, along with the cry wolf syndrome of current times, almost trivializes and is an insult to what previous generations of the non-white population has gone through, including the natives. Let's face it, white people are the invaders and occupiers of North America and the Caucasian advancement came at the brutal cost of the natives that inhabited the land when we got here and those "minorities" brought over to do hard labour like build railways and work the farms. I'm not one for "xxx-word" terms but calling someone a "nigger" is a hell of a lot less egregious than hanging or whipping one.

As you seem woefully unaware of what racism actually entails, this entry doesn't make any sense.
I was deeply saddened to read that my entry "doesn't make any sense" to you.

I tried to keep it as simple as possible for the benefit of the slower members of the board.

I avoided multi-syllabic words(hint..that means b-i-g- words) for that reason.

It is unfortunate(oops, that's four syllables..I'll edit)
It is too bad that you couldn't comprehend(get) the post.

I made a conscientious(damn it, did it again) let's say, honest, attempt at simplicity, always with the
dimmer bulbs in mind.

Here's an idea...find someone with a bit more intellectual acumen, like, say, the next person you see,to take you
through the post slowly.

I hope this helps.

Honestly, non-causation people have been horribly racist to me. When I lived in NYC I would get random outbursts on the streets from non-Caucasian girls screaming out at me, like "look at this white bitch, lookin like Paris Hilton!" Or "this white bitch thinks she's Barbie!" It's actually very intimidating and feels very threatening.... Then there are the less offensive and less obvious things... For example when I go to an ethnic restaurant which is usually only frequented by people of that particular culture (I like authentic food) I prefer to bring with me a friend if that same culture because I feel I get better service.... But for whatever reason, it's not acknowledged as racism unless its something offensive that is said or done by a Caucasian to a non-Caucasian.... I'm not sure why....

yes and that's because it's so easy to say "dumb white" is racist and "dumb asian" is racist, both say "dumb" to a race, and both white and asian are races, so they must be equally offensive! The world must be really, really simple eh? But I'll bet these same people would hate to lose the genetic lottery and be born asian!
I'm not sure I follow the "hate to be born Asian" part.

do you mean hate to be born Asian in a euro-centric environment, like much of North America?
I doubt that you mean hate to be born Asian in Asia?

Looking at Vancouver&,Toronto especially,I don't think it'd be a horrible thing being born Asian there.

a big chunk of the future rests with Canadians of Asian ethnicity, as seen in university enrollments, politicians
of various minorities elected in civic, provincial and federal ridings.

I honestly don't see how being born Asian would be losing a genetic lottery.

No, she's seen as a psychotic bitch.

No, they're both seen as extremists, fundamentalists, and destructive.

Saying "I'm proud to be straight" is not viewed as an attack by any gay people I know - and I know about thirty of them. People wonder why there's no "straight pride day" - and my response is that EVERY FUCKING DAY is "straight pride day".

Taking a friendly "white boy" comment - which is clearly meant to take a historically racist context, turn it on its head, mock it, and have fun with it - should not be confused with double standards that actually matter. It's the old complaint about why "black power" was okay and "white power" is not. And it's because one does not necessarily have to be "against" whites. But the other most definitely has to be taken in a context against non-whites.

I understand why people bring up these 'double standard' discussions - but not all of them are of equal merit, if people stop and think critically about them.

I agree Arland Bruce's comments were made in fun.
If Tanner Marsh made a similar comment,it too would've been in fun.

people's reactions, I believe, would've been very much different.
true, historical injustice existed, but in 2013 where we hear the message of equality, then there shouldn't be a double standard.

well said, Cami, you were discriminated against, pure&simple.
and it was NOT "reverse" racism, a term used by apologistic deliverers of drivel

racism is racism, no forward, reverse, neutral,or park, it is what it is, racism

something that the pollyannas would never consider....in a big USA city, a minority could accidentally wander into
a Caucasian neighbourhood.He/she might be insulted but very unlikely to be physically injured.
in the same city,if a Caucasian got lost and ended up in certain 'hoods, there'd be a real threat to his life.

I think you're way better off here,Cami, than in NY.

That's so true... All you have to do is cross the wrong street and it could be the end for you... Thanks for understanding! I was wondering if my experiencees would be downplayed, or you guys would tell me I was silly... So thanks for that, and it's true, it's much better here...

Yes, what you experienced was racism. It's horrible, isn't it? Made you feel scared, threatened, devalued, and you were just being yourself too! What's wrong with being white? Nothing, you were born that way. Is it right that they did that to you? No!! You did nothing wrong! You were always nice to people no matter what colour they are. In fact, you probably say you are colour blind, and it's they who are not colour blind! It's not right that they treated you that way! You're a decent person! You treat everyone fairly! You are the type to go out and help someone in time of need! You have friends of any and ever colour! You are a law abiding citizen! You're an honest person! You earn every single penny you made without any handouts! You don't deserve to be treated that way!!!!

Welcome to the world of racism. It was horrible for you, but think how horrible it was for these people of colour who live in a white-dominated world. Nobody has to yell at them and call them names, they experience racism in one form or another every day. They have white people criticizing them for their customs, the way they do things, the way they drive, how they speak, their accents, how they eat, their manners, how loud they are, how they talk, etc. Maybe not afforded the same opportunities, maybe they think whites are given preferential treatment when applying for the same job or a loan, maybe they didn't get a smile from the McDonald's server and they think it was their colour, maybe the police officer wasn't taking them seriously because of their colour but they take the white neighbour's complaints seriously. Just every day things. And they are not colour blind like you can be, because they can't afford to be. They see colour all the time, they are forced to living in a world that makes their colour the subject of rejection.

It's not right what they did to you! But remember, it's a backlash for generations and generations of living under white-dominated rule. So for a white person to scream how unfair it is when they are the subject of racist attacks, try what Jesus said: walk a mile in the other person's shoes.

times have changed.

I read about govt's in some places, eg LA, where companies were mandated to hire minorities only, regardless of job
qualifications.

of course, that was a few yrs ago,now I believe whites are the minority in LA,or at least large sections of it.

hmmm, wonder how it was that the whites came to dominate in the first place?

You keep repeating this question. You clearly want someone to say that they are smarter, more handsome, genetically or culturally superior? Have a superior religion? What? Is that what you are looking for?

The answer was given in post 38: "Because they were in power."

They were in power due to the luck of history. Western Europe was the first to develop many of the modern weapons and methods of warfare and use them to their advantage, giving them (and eventually, England's former colonies) the means to dominate the world. Before them there were Mongols, Macedonians, Romans, Arabs. After them, who knows? The Chinese? The Indians? The Islamic hordes that so many people are fearful of? The Klingons? Someone else will be the overlords eventually, and probably sooner rather than later, judging by the cycles of history. They have already had 600 years or so (collectively, since they were a number of competing power bases in France, Spain, England, Portugal, Russia -- even Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands) -- that's more than the time the Romans lasted.

thank you Hank for that, nobody else would respond, not even the guy whose handle would indicate he considers
himself to be a rectal orifice.

not sure about the "luck" part.

I remember Bobby Clarke, capt of the Philadelphia Flyers saying, "the harder I work, the luckier I get."

As I pointed out, Normisanas did respond. "Because they were in power" is all that my elaboration boils down to. The luck comes from the historical circumstances that allowed them to develop and apply their inventions and dominate the rest of the planet for their benefit. Apparently, the answer you wanted was that they worked harder. Sheesh.

not to say that luck cannot be a factor in the way events play out,Hank.

the whims of weather have probably decided many battles through the ages.

I'd be interested in hearing a bit more about the historical circumstances you refer to and how theses circumstances aided
in the development and applications of their inventions.

You could google "Renaissance" -- but of course, the Renaissance only happened because Europeans were smarter, etc. than other cultures, and not because of a complex set of historical conditions that allowed Europeans to begin building on the Greek, Arab and Roman engineering, philosophy and science of earlier centuries. While Europeans were busy for centuries (between the fall of the Romans and the Renaissance) grubbing in the fields for feudal lords, and providing battle fodder for their petty tyrant's squabbles, the Chinese and Arabs were busy developing science, math, and their own advanced cultures (until they too, fell victim to squabbles and circumstances of their own).

You want an example? The Chinese invented gunpowder -- not just for fireworks, but for weapons as well. The Europeans eventually developed the engineering skills to make serious, world-changing weapons (along with advances in ship-building) that allowed them to seize whatever they wanted from those that had not yet figured that out. Ruling the world by might pretty much allowed them to prevent developments elsewhere that could compete. Getting all the wealth pretty much allows you to keep growing and getting more wealth. Until recently, of course, when nationality has little to do with who has all the wealth.... Decisions that affect the world are not made by governments any longer, but in corporate boardrooms.

All friggin' history is a combination of luck and circumstance. It zigs towards one course, and zags to another.

Times have not changed.... times are only changing. To say that times have changed, you are using that to actually say all is equal now so we are all playing on a level playing field. No we are not, because European colonialism started in the 1400s and a lot has been done to establish European institutions and power since then. They are not going to go away, along with all the prejudices, etc, after only a few short years of Affirmative Action and some city in North America that has more Latinos in ONE area than another. To focus on a few exceptions, like you seem to do, is having nothing but purposefully skew the truth of the matter for the purpose of bolstering your intolerance.

And as for the question you keep asking that HankQuinlan was nice enough to babysit you on, I already answered it. You just need to open your eyes and actually think about what I wrote instead of asking us to prove your ridiculous line of questioning. The onus is on you, not us to prove to you anything.

you mean we are NOT all equal?
are you arguing with the PC hordes that say we are?

re the LA thing...with respect, you'll find more than ONE area having a Latino majority.

as to your answering my question....you said something like because they were in power, which was not an answer to my query, which was WHY were they in power.
far from babysitting me, Hank was good enough to direct his answer to my question..something you were unwilling/unable to do.

I can assure you that my eyes were open as I read your posts, entertaining as they are.

lastly, you accuse me of "intolerance"...interesting choice of words from someone who believes being born Asian is losing the genetic lottery.
I am too nice to call you hypocritical on that.

something that seems to get overlooked in the white man-stole-the-land bleatings is that, long before the arrival of europens, the various tribes
did not co-exist in perfect harmony.

they had conflicts and when one tribe defeated another "to the victors go the spoils" prevailed.
the men of the defeated tribe became worker-slaves,if they were not tortured to death, and the women became slaves
to serve in whatever way the winners desired including being sexual prizes.

the last slavery in North America was not on Civil War era plantations, but in northern B.C. and Queen Charlotte \islands
in the late 19th century, well after it was outlawed in the US.

the Europeans who came here did not invent taking the land from its owners.
