Watching both CFL and NFL football this year is an ordeal at times due to the amount of flags one sees in a game. With all these new rules instated to try to promote offense and player safety (or so they say) they have taken the flow right out of the game.

I think we can all agree we want the great players who play these games to have the rule book afford them some kind of protection, I think we can all agree football is a rough game and the injuries, both minor and serious are inevitable. It's a contact/collision sport, people are going to be bumped and hit, that is what makes it fun to watch and fun to play and I think the players on all sides of the ball would agree (well, maybe not the kickers).

My point is that the game is over officiated and that they should examine, modify and even eliminate some of these new rules changes, especially in the passing game IE new PI rules and illegal contact rules (which has been miscalled in every game at some point this season). Give the game back to the players, let them play and give the game back its flow.

a college football player told me a long time ago that every player on the football field has the knowledge and ability to put ANY other player in the hospital or even end their career if they wish - that's how frail the human body is compared to the forces at play out there

he said the only thing keeping that from happening regularly is sportsmanship - which he said is really just the code of self-preservation. that is, 'injure my team-mate and i will injure you in the very next play!'

maybe what's missing in the modern game is the sportsmanship?

Ok, but isn't there some happy medium between player safety and letting the game be played? Most of these flags are pretty ticky-tacky stuff where the player's safety is never in jeopardy. Plus, like in hockey, if you don't have your head up, you are gonna get knocked down and if it's a clean hit, no one can complain. Risk you run playing a game like that.

i definitely agree with you. i think player ego vs. league (appearance of) political correctness is the problem

imo there is no way of changing players' attitudes with more and more rules. pretty soon football will be like basketball regarding rules
