I tried an Irish whiskey many moons ago and either my palate wasn't mature enough or it was swill and since I've been reluctant to try it again. Having purchased a few nice single malt Scotch's in the past week (found a liquor store 4km from me that has an AMAZING selection of rare whiskeys) the clerk talked me into a bottle of 21yr Bushmills Irish whiskey. I cracked the seal this evening and have been sipping at it for a couple of hours and am rather impressed. It definitely has a very different taste and feel then Scotch whiskeys but a very nice alternative.

Nice to see you like a wee drop of the good stuff from time to time.
Yah that 21 yr old is smooth as a prom queens thigh but not quite so risky!:D

For a slightly less pricey bottle I usually go for the 10yr old Bushmills in the green box. Great stuff ! Very nice finish to it.

Wonder if JF is going to chime in here. :p

I picked up a bottle of the 10yr as well and had a brief sip and you're right it does have a nice finish that I'd put against any comparably priced single malt Scotch I favor.

Now now now......no need for a whiskey jihad ;)

I know that if it were up to alanon, AA or anyone else in the temperance movement I'd probably be classified as an alcoholic given what they view as a drinking problem but I honestly don't believe that to be the case. Yes I probably have an evening drink ~5 nights a week but its not because I have to, nor do I have to have a drink in the morning to steady my nerves, don't binge drink, etc.

I simply enjoy the taste of a nice liquor, whiskey or wine.

I enjoy a good red wine over any Irish wiskey. The last time I had a taste at a birthday party for a friend and I had to drink it for her sake. It tasted like paint thinner, it was horrible. Maybe you have to drink enough of it to acquire a taste for Irish wiskey.

The continuous triple-distillation of Irish whisky does give it an unique character. The Auchentoshen is the only Scoth whisky which uses triple distillation, but in batches in the Scottish style.

Personally, I love the peat and smoke of any Islay malts.

But just like women, they make them different because we each like different things.

Not all Irish whiskey is triple distilled. It's distinct flavour is due to a significant quantity of unmalted barley and other grains in addition to malted barley. This is what's called Irish Pot Still whiskey. The most authentic pure Pot Still whiskey available in Canada (and in Ireland for that matter) is Redbreast. Jamesons, Powers, Tullamore are blends of Pot Still and column-distilled grain whiskey.

Bushmills is different, using the triple-distilled pure malted barley whiskey.

Generally quite enjoyable, except for Bushmills White Label and Paddy.

[JackFrost]Aye, but ofcourse :D
Aye laddy, there never be a failin' in true Irish blood, I knew I could
count on ye !:D

I really enjoy my Irish whiskey..
Many people drink Jamesons..which is a very nice whiskey, but there are better

-Tullamore Dew
-John Powers
-Blackbush by Bushmills..powerful..a sipping whiskey
-Paddy..this is to Ireland..what Canadian Club is to Canada..cheap and nasty..but does the trick
Jamesons is my usual fare always on hand, good reliable drink in the usual
price range. But I do keep on hand , Bushmills and sometimes the 10yr old
counterpart when the pocket allows. Tried the blackbushmills and mother
of Jeysus is that powerful stuff ! Don't lite a smoke if you're drinkin'
that stuff. :D

Tullamore Dew or Powers would have to be my favourites. Irish whiskey is an acquired taste. Spend some time in Ireland, and you'll never go back :D
Thanks for the tip on these two as have to try them yet. Been back to Ireland myself and you know what ..........haven't been back since !! :D
Too us "heathen" drinkers of Irish whiskey, if you're
from Ireland it's not an aquired taste, it's in your blood ! :D

Otherwise I would have to agree, could be an aquired taste.

Btw, just enjoying a wee drop of the good stuff right now, 10yr old Bushmills,
Bloooooody Marvelous !!

Cheers folks !

Vancouver - sort of
Hijack, lol

Edradour, single malt Scotch is a great one when available. They don't make much, if fact their annual output is something less than Glenfiddich's daily.

The Singleton, first class as is Caol Ila.

Islay malts

As for me, I like the full flavor of the malts from the South east bight of Islay off the west coast of Scotland. Lagavulin and Laphroaig - great sipping. The distilleries are neighbors. Similar but distinct tastes. Go to Morrisey's and have the bartender give you a blind test.

In fact, my boat is named Lagavulin, as in:

Kayaker12: Comox Coast Guard, this is Lagavulin.

CCG: Go ahead, Lagavulin.

K12: Comox, there's a redheaded gurrl stowed away on me boot, and the sweet lass is nibblin' on me knob.

CCG: Lagavulin, be advised we're sending our fastest cutter and crew to assist.

A Slightly Related Topic

Last summer, Dan Akroyd was in town promoting Patron Tequila and one of the local Harley dealerships hosted a ride and tasting one Saturday morning (now, there's a good idea... A couple of hundred bikers, free tequila...)
Anyways, I was surprised and pleased by the flavour and smoothness of Gran Patron... Actual sipping tequila!!! It won't replace a good single malt, but is interesting as a change of pace. I've since tryed other premium tequilas and some of them are quite good as well.

I was there last year! The whole opperation is in a single building. Yet, they employ more men than Glen Grant, as everything is "done by hand". I have a hand numbered non-chill filtered bottle I'm just waiting to try.

As for Islay, I think the Ardbeg is a good addition to the L's (all three are close to each other, but each is different).

Now i'm thinking that I'll have to explore some of the Irish!
