Perhaps something similar to the custody arrangements we have today. Through discussion or mediation, the couple should agree on the custody arrangement, it could be shared or otherwise. I don't see any natural benefit in having the kids stay automatically with one parent, it just gives too much power on men or women.

I am also not in favor of forcing an unloving parent to raise children. There are some people who are truly incapable of parenting. With people like this, they should just be enforced by law to financially support their children.

Pissoffwife, I must say that there are many who are not even nearly as fortunate as your husband who was able to find you and get a chance at marriage. Interesting but really sad story. The man's behaviour in this case was driven by a deep underlying psychopathology which is typical of people whose lives have been controlled by addiction. Hope the guy gets professional help before his addiction completely ruins his life.
