And the deadline's not til next week.

The Oilers picked up Petr Nedved and goaltender Jussi Markkanen for forward Dwight Helminen, goalie Stephen Valiquette and a 2004 second-round pick.

If Nedved plays with Dvorak and Hemsky, they'll be a potent scoring line.

Washington traded defenceman Sergei Gonchar to the Boston Bruins in exchange for defenceman Shaone Morrisonn and a first and second round draft pick in the 2004 Entry Draft.

Good one. Boston hasn't had a good offensive defenseman since Ray Bourque.

The Toronto Maple Leafs got veteran defenceman Brian Leetch from the New York Rangers as well as a conditional draft pick - either a fourth-round selection in 2004 or third rounder in 2005 - they gave up their first-round selection in this June's NHL entry draft, a second-round draft pick in 2005 as well as prospects Maxim Kondratiev and Jarko Immonen.

May as well hand that Cup to Toronto right now and let the CBC prepare for the coast-to-coast broadcast of the victory parade hosted by MacLean and Cherry.

New York is making some really good moves. They have shed millions in payroll and acquired loads of prospects and draft picks in return. Most of their trade’s involved one underachiever or another. Kovalev was only good under Mario’s wing. Nedved and Leech are both old enough to join the Leafs. They will continue their trend of one injury after another.

Glen Sather should be fired and replaced with a young GM whose reputation is still intact.

Leafs For the Cup. WTF?

Hey Wolverine, you wouldn't happen to be a Leafs fan now would you? A little too early to be handing them the Stanley Cup already. They might even end up finishing third in their division behind Ottawa (The likely favourite) and Boston. The addition of Brian Leetch should help them some, but they're already loaded with old geezers who'll wear down easily after playing every other night. Personally I hope they get knocked out in the first round (A strong possibility) so I don't have to listen to CBCs center of the universe propaganda.

There's a special bonus with Petr Nedved joining the Oilers, in that his wife (Veronica Varekova) is the recent cover girl for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Maybe we'll be lucky enough to have her visit our fair city.
Do yourselves a favour and check out her pictures in the issue. That Petr is one lucky bastard. :)

Kev wonders why those who don't know anything about hockey, talk hockey. You seem to have forgotten about Philly, Ottawa, and all the other great NHL clubs out there.:rolleyes:

I have always liked the way Edmonton plays the game of hockey. Unfortunately they don't have two nickles to rub together, so Nedved it is. Aquiring Nedved? Well hes better than nothing, but if thats all Edmonton has got may the rest of the NHL have mercy on their poor souls.

Gonchar to Boston is a good call. Leech to Toronto is a good call. Although i still hate the Leafs. --- Kev

I see that sarcasm goes right over the heads of some hockey fans. :rolleyes:

P-Man, I haven't seen Nedved's girlfriend, but I do know that some of these NHLers get some prime trim.

Kev where are you hoping ...

the Canucks will "GO TO" (LOL)? I am an arrogant Oilers Homeboy so I obviously have a few suggestions - for example:

1. They could go golfing in April;
2. Skiing at Whistler in May;
3. Sweedish Touch or Madame Cleo's today (if they were smart enough);
4. Dante's retreat (HELL if that is to subtle); or
5. Back to the Draft to get some decent players.

Oh how I love the passion of a good sportts battle. Unfortunately, you are correct in your original comments. The Oilers only hope is always a long term gamble with youth and Western Canadian kids that might stay on long enough to make a Cup Run. There is little loyalty among players and the Oilers have become a farm team for the "Purse Holders" because of it. But what a great farm team! IMHO Edmontonians still see some of the most entertaining Hockey. Vancouver Canucks are also a very entertaining team to watch. The Games between the two teams are a treat, although Vancouver has domintaed for the past few years.

Nuff said. If the OIl can't get that Cup back to Canada, I want the Canucks - Ottawa - TO - Habs - in that order to get the job done. You will notice I missed the Calgary Flames. I can't hope for them under any set of circumstances. In the legendary words of Kevin Lowe when he turned down Calgary's Offer upon his return to the Alberta scene (which was much more lucrative than Edmonton's offer) "It would be un-natural for me to where a Flames Sweater" . The rivalry has been too wonderful and too real for players with PRIDE.

The New York Rangers have traded Chris Simon and a seventh round pick in 2004 to the Calgary Flames for Jamie McLennan, Blair Betts and prospect Greg Moore.

The Rangers also claimed forward Josh Green off waivers from the Flames. Flames goaltender Roman Turek also cleared waivers Saturday.

Ana Kournikova used to date Federov and then later Bure if I recall correctly.

Actually it was revealed last year that Sergei Fedorov and Anna Kournikova were indeed married for a short time. I think her latest fling with Enrique Iglesias had something to do with the breakup.

We'll have to wait until March 7th 8th 9th to see if there are any real big trades. If there are any to be had that is. I feel Sather isn't finished dumping other Ranger players. --- Kev

I suspect that most of the "big-name" trades are done. I think Kolzig is going to be moved. Other than that, the big sellers (Wash, NYR) have sold most of their wanted goods.

All that's going to happen is minor bits and pieces for a teams playoff run will be solved.

The probable lockout is going to steem the regular comings and goings of the trade deadline. I think last year kind of spoiled us hockey fans with all the flurry of last-minute deals..I don't think that will happen this year.

My 2 cents.

Speaking of Salo, the writing's on the wall for him. Bye bye Tommy. Well, he'll always have a home in Belarus, much like Steve Smith was welcomed with open arms in Calgary.
Heh...you called it, my friend! I just wish the Oilers could have obtained a powerplay defenseman who can play now instead of in the future.

Yup !!!

Good call go-esks. With Conks and Jussy around, you had to know Tommy's days were numbered. Agree with Wolvie though. To bad about that, or...a Big guy down the middle would have been nice. Funny thing about this year's trades is that unlike all teams trying to better themselves, the good ones got better and the lousy ones got worse it appears. Surprised the Canucks didn't go after another goon to replace the one they lost indefinitely.

The Canucks did trade for Martin Rucinsky and Geoff Sanderson...evidently to replace Bertuzzi's scoring as opposed to his thuggery.

Bertuzzi is going to get a very lengthy suspension for that mugging. I wouldn't exactly call it a hit as Steve Moore got slammed head first into the ice which resulted in a broken neck. Chances are Moore probably won't play again in which I hope I am wrong about. Vancouver City Police are investigating it as well but there is no word on if any assault charges will be laid.

With York coming back and Nedved in town, the Oils PP looks pretty darn good. Needed that extra point though with St. Louis winning tonight.

There's a good discussion going on in the main Lounge area regarding Bertuzzi's hit. Most of the posters are from Vancouver area and everyone condones the way Bertuzzi handles himself. Personally, I think he should be suspended for 20-30 games. A pre-mediated assault (there's no other word for it) on the street would result in jail time, and this one still might, but I think the NHL has really got to toughen up and make Bertuzzi pay for his actions and make his teammates suffer as well. How else will he learn?

I`ve read the thread and I don`t think anyone there condones Bertuzzi`s neanderthal action! Check it out yourself. Here`s the link:

Based on the Marty McSorley/Donald Brashear incident that happened a few years back, where McSorley was suspended for the rest of that season and the next, I wouldn't expect anything less in this case. For one Colin Campbell and the NHL stated that they would be cracking down on blows to the head as well as stating that every player must be held accountable for their actions. You could also say that this attack was pre-meditated as all the Canuck coaching staff and players were talking about the last couple of weeks was a payback for what happened to Naslund. For this reason I think Marc Crawford should also be receiving a suspension for not having control over his players.

I've always thought that in a case like this where one player intentially puts another player out of commision, that player should be suspended for the entire duration of the period that the injured player is out. In Bertuzzi's case, that just could be the rest of his carreer.

There's a time and a place to get even with another player. Drop your gloves and settle it like a man.
What Bertuzzi did was totaly gutless and brutal. I'm sure he's feeling regrets and guilt about it now,(not to mention the millions he's going to lose in salary) but too late as the damage has been done.

Bertuzzi will no doubt miss the rest of the season to suspension and will forfeit almost 1.2 million in pay. This incident was far worse than the McSorely-Brashear incident in my opinon and I can also see Bertuzzi being suspended for next season as well. In another fourm one poster even called for the NHL to test Bertuzzi for steroids since he has snapped in the past a few times including hitting a linesman once <recieved 3 game suspension> and leaving the bench to join a fight <10 games for that one.> Coach Marc Crawford was smirking about the incident and word is that he may have premeditated it by telling Bertuzzi to go out and hurt this kid.

I agree with both of you ...

but hope that Crawford was not the instigator of this brutal attack. I know him and it is not true to his nature. He is a gentleman who would normally do no more than send out his enforcer to have a face-to-face encounter.

I could be wrong, but I though I should at least put in my 2 cents.
