Okay, I stole this idea from Team 1040 today, it was a great broadcast to
hear the memories of what got people hooked on hockey and what was
there first exposure to the game.

What was yours?

Something memorable for me today, Boston Bruins defeated Montreal
twice in a row in pre season action. :D :D :p :p :p

Saturday night after supper and after a bath when I was about 3 or 4 years old I would go sit on the couch and watch Hockey Night in Canada with my dad. I remember Yvan Cournoyer and Frank Mahovlich and even though my dad died a few years ago, I can't hear the Hockey Night In Canada theme without thinking of him and remembering being curled up beside him on the couch on a winter night as he told me about NHL games and players as we watched the game.

Yes. I heard a bit of the first taste of the NHL on Team 1040 (the hate Pratt, love Taylor show).

My first taste of the NHL was when my dad took me to a pre-season game between the Canucks and the Red Wings. Now, we're talking Orland Kurtenbach and Gordie Howe. Yes, Gordie ... fucking ... Howe. Oh yeah, this is way back.

My old man sends me down to get autographs during what looks like a casual scrimmage. I go to Orland first. I tap him on this huge shoulder with a program and a pen. He looks up at me with a snarl and says, "Not now, kid." the game is on and Orland is into it.

I look up in the stands and my father is gesturing over to the Wings bench. There are about 30 kids clustered around Gordie. I wedge in and get an autograph somehow. I have to wait two shifts, during which time, Gordie makes an assist and crunches some poor little Canuck like Andre Boudrias into the boards. When Gordie gets back to the bench, the kids cluster around and he takes a couple of big breaths like a Clydesdale and signs and smiles for every last fucking one of us.

I always hoped for the Wings after that.

OMFG ! Man you have no idea how scary that is, I was going to post the
same damn thing later on in the thread. I lost my Dad too a few years ago
and , well, you know something, there ain't nothin' better than hockey
and Dads !! :) ( Well maybe fishin and dad's :D )

I was about the same age, all the greats, ( No Friggin Gretzkies then ),
just killer hockey players. One thing....you remember the broadcasts by
Foster Huwett? (sp?). And oh yah, my all time Idol, Bobby Orr only seconded
by Gordie Howe. But I did manage to get an autograph from Stan Mikita
at a Canucks game, He ruffled my hair and said enjoy da game kid !

Not much, but on the edge of my memory is the cartoon of Peter Puck.
Next is being in the bowels of the Pacific Colossium the my brand new autograph book from London drugs with my dad.
That nite I got the autographs of Kevin Lowe, Paul Coffey, Stan Smyl, Harold Snepts and more. Waited around for Wayner, but he never came out, and this was only '79.
Dad was yellin' 'HARRY' all nite, he loved the guy.

This is the reason why we have favourites and why we love the game
so much. Good post LB.

That HNIC theme song, but that was it.
I didn't really watch hockey until the 1984 playoffs, when the Oil won their first Cup.

1968 and bobby hull and the chicago blackhawks playing the montreal canadians ...

and it was at a friend's house whose dad was a huge sports fan (my dad
wasn't into sports) ...

it was a particular treat because they even had colour tv (my dad still has
a B&W!) and their dad had played hockey! (in an amateur league, but it was like being with the greats!).

the best memory was when all the dad's in the neighbourhood
(except mine, of course) organized a father/sons street hockey game!
it was kids against the dads (we won) and then a huge street BBQ
afterwards ...

so if you got to watch even one game with your own dad,
cherish the memory ... mine is of someone else's dad showing
a little kindness.

Winnipeg - 1955 - sitting in front of the black and white tv with the funny plastic screen that you could put on the screen to make it look like color. Everyone had tinges of yellow, green or red
It was a family tradition to sit down as a family, have hamburgers and watch HNIC.

Watching the sadly lacking Canucks in the 80's as a kid with my Dad. I was a little young to fully grasp the game at the time, but I certainly remember:

"Haaaaaaarroooooold, Haaaaaaaaarroooooold" chant for my then favourite defenceman.

Anyone know who owns the rights to the HNIC theme?

With the CBC's broadcasting rights up at the end of the 2007-08 NHL season, and the looming CTV-TSN bid ($1.4 billion over 10 years)... it just wouldn't be the same without the HNIC theme

What was yours?
Bobby Hull circling behind his own net and skating (flying) the length of the ice for a shot on goal.

Eddie Shack's crazy up ice out of control rushes (usually no shot on goal).

Stan Mikita's stickhandling.

Tim Horton's slap shot from the point on a Leafs power play.

The amazing smooth teamwork and finesse of the Flying Frenchmen.

Murray Westgate and those Esso ads (there's a tiger in your tank).

Ward Cornell.

How shitty the Bruins and Rangers were (nothing changes, eh?).

CBC's HNIC starting half way through the 2nd period (WTF?).

Sunday night hockey on CBC radio.

My mum made me watch Julliette after the Saturday HNIC game!!! Fuck me!!

Doug Harvey.....he was Bobby Orr before Bobby Orr.

Great goalies (and brave..or stupid!) Hall, Sawchuk, Bower, Plante, Worsley.

Hating the Leafs and their underachievers (nothing changes eh!).

Great Senior hockey teams like the Trail Smoke Eaters.

mine was............the very first hockey game with my DAD.....he took me to see the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary flames.....Roger Neison was our coach at the time......the ever popular towel power!!!! :)

First exposure:

1st visit to Canada, stayed in Edmonton for a month around Easter time in 1984. Everywhere I went it was Edmonton Oilers this and Wayne Gretzky that, which was my first peek at the NHL.

What got me hooked:

Moved to Montreal in the Winter of 1988 and followed the Habs regular season and playoff run all the way to the 1989 Stanley Cup finals. Then discovering that they are the winningest team in the history of the NHL.

What got me even more hooked:

A record 10 consecutive sudden death OT win en route to their 24th Stanley Cup in 1993. Telling all the sore losers/haters (especially those poor buggers who have been waiting since 1967 ;) ) that they are still the last Canadian team to win it all and have done so more than anybody else.

In my house we had to listen to HNIC every Sat night, listening to the radio if u hadn't guessed, listening to Foster Hewit describ the Rocket score a goal it was like there was no else on the ice!Watching the first broadcaston that big square box with the small round screen I believe it was a Marconi seemed suitable has the Habs and Leafs were on.Again Foster was there:)
