This amazing footage shows what could be the world’s strongest security barrier withstanding a 50mph smash with a truck with barely a wobble.

The stunning slo-mo video shows the ultra-tough barrier hardly moving from the collision which leaves a huge flatbed truck completely crumpled.

The heavy-duty fence, built from normal steel and concrete, easily withstood a head-on smash with an astonishing 750,000lbs of force as the truck piled into it.

While the brown 42-inch barrier only slightly wobbled, the lorry’s huge engine block is completely squashed and its main car destroyed.

Designers Texas A&M Transportation Institute, who have not yet named the barrier, were tasked with creating a new perimeter security fence to protect sensitive facilities from car bombs and terror attacks.

The barrier emerged unscathed from the test, despite being hit with three times the strength required for a Boeing 747 to lift off.

Associate Research Engineer William Williams is the mastermind behind the 13-year project - which was tested on September 24.

He said: 'We have been working with the State Department since 2001 developing various devices designed to keep locations safe from bombings.

'The State Department wanted a design that was more visually pleasing than the devices used in the past.'

While standing only 42 inches high and having only shallow concrete foundations, the 18in cylindrical barrier weighs an incredible 50,000 lbs, the equivalent to two armoured cars.

A spokesperson for American company TTI added testing of the 15ft barrier was a success, because it stopped the truck and its cargo.

They're gonna have to redesign truck cabs too! Wouldn't have been anything left of the driver.

This barrier is to protect against a rammed intrusion.

Most barriers are to protect against a run away vehicle or out of control vehicle going off the road or bridge. In this case you want something which will absorb energy so the occupant in the vehicle has less inertial trauma. Same as with the front of the vehicle, it is designed to crumple and absorb the energy of the impact for personal safety.

Not sure if you had this in mind when you recommended it for the lower mainland. Just thought I would mention this in case you thought all barriers should be designed like this. Design criteria seems to be a bit different.

One designed for the safety of people, the other designed for the safety of an impenetrable barrier for security reasons.
